Obituary for Gary "Bill" Holloway

Gary William Holloway (“Bill”, Lil Tumor”, “Buck, “Uncle Bull”) was born under a cloud of confusion. You see, his mother was 49 ½ and at the time it was rather unheard of to be pregnant at that age. The doctors decided the growth must be a tumor. As they were preparing for surgery, one of them thought to ask Bill’s father if it was possible that she could be pregnant. Bill’s brothers were in their 20s at the time. He indignantly replied “Well of course she could”... Thankfully Bill lived to see his birth on August 30, 31 or September 1, 1949, depending on whose authority you claim (Bill claimed all of them to increase the festivities).

Bill grew up in Harlowton, MT surrounded by horses, hunting, rodeo and friends. He suffered a car accident in his early teens that led to a bum left shoulder, but he still enjoyed football, basketball and especially track, in which he excelled. School occurred in there somewhere. He did graduate from Harlowton High in 1967 then attended the University of Montana to study physical therapy.

Bill and Sue got married June 14th, 1969 on Flag Day, convinced all the flags were for them. He “nearly graduated” from U of M and pursued many vocations. Among them were forestry, framer at Big Sky, florist, Ford salesman and others. He finally found his true calling when he became a registered nurse and went to work at Valley Health Care. A short time later he was put into management and became the Director of Nursing there – a position to which he was uniquely qualified. Bill loved nursing, “his residents” and the job. When he retired, he hung around a year or so to teach up and coming CNAs how to care for his residents.

Bill’s fondest memories were of hunting, fishing, riding a horse in the Gallatin and exploring the world with his grandchildren. He is, and always will be, a University of Montana Grizzly fan. He always made everyone feel welcome and made friends easily, with the possible exception of his mother-in-law.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, Frank and Connie Holloway of Harlowton; brothers, Dick of Roseburg Oregon and Howard, and Roy, both of Harlowton. He is survived by his patient and loving wife of 50 years, Barbara Holloway “Sue”; two surprisingly well adjusted and wildly successful sons, Frank Holloway (Tori) of Loveland, Colorado and Jess Holloway (Meggan) of Bozeman; and two amazing grandsons (both are geniuses), Ethan Holloway at Colorado School of Mines and Aidan Holloway at Rocky Mountain College in Billings.

Bill’s life will be remembered and celebrated at a service Saturday, April 13 at 1:00pm at Dahl Funeral Chapel in Billings, MT. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to RiverStone Hospice of Billings.
