Obituary for Gerald Hemmer

On the morning of May 15, 2020, we had to say goodbye to a wonderful man. Gerald Hemmer was 93 years young and died peacefully with his family by his side.
Gerald was born in Lothair, Mont., on Oct. 7, 1926, the son of Mathias Hemmer and Anna Schroer Hemmer. At the age of two, Gerald’s mother died suddenly. Grief stricken and unable to care for such a young child, Gerald’s father sent him, his twin brother, and one other sibling to the local orphanage. Once completing high school, Gerald enlisted in the U.S. Army and later in the Marines. Gerald served his country in both World War II and the Korean War.
After returning from service, Gerald moved to Chester, Mont., and met the love of his life, Betty Louise Gehrke. They were married on Dec. 29, 1953, and raised five children. In 1961, Gerald and Betty moved to Lincoln, where Gerald tended bar at Lampkins. In 1974, Gerald and Betty purchased the 7-up Ranch & Supper Club. Owning and operating the business was a high point in their lives, bringing them an incredible amount of joy. In 1993, they sold the restaurant and moved to Billings. Gerald spent his remaining years traveling with Betty to Yuma, Ariz., in the winters and Alaska in the summers.
Gerald had many interests and passions. He loved fishing, reading (especially Louis L'Amour books), watching westerns, and playing cards with his family. Gerald also enjoyed traveling and he always looked forward to his visits to Alaska and his Las Vegas gambling trips. He especially appreciated hosting and entertaining guests – no one made a better Manhattan! Gerald found the most joy when sharing laughter and love at family gatherings. In full agreement with his wife and above all else, he considered his grandchildren to be his greatest treasures.
Gerald is survived by four daughters, Cindy Lou Hemmer of Fayetteville, Ark., Mary Ann (Lee) Hickle of Willow, Alaska and Laughlin, Nev., Jeanne Sawatzky and Barbara Cline of Billings; one son, Gerald James Hemmer of Billings; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; brothers, Frank, John, Lawrence, Joseph, James, George, Charles; sister, Annaleen (Hemmer) Zeeke; and his infant son, Baby James Hemmer.
Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, you may give to the charity of your choice.
