Obituary for Levi "Gummo" Tosi Surrell, Sr.

Levi Tosi Surrell Sr, "Gummo", went to his eternal home on August 2, 2019. He was 80 years old.

Levi was born on June 2, 1939 in Fort Washakie, WY to Edith Hill and Eugene Surrell. He was adopted at the age of 2 by his maternal grandmother, Eunice Compton, and her partner, Archie Braman. Levi lived his entire life on the Wind River Reservation and its surrounding mountains. He attended schools in Fort Washakie and Fremont County Vocational High School in Lander, eventually earning his G.E.D. He was a "jack of all trades" but primarily worked as a maintenance worker for Fort Washakie School and the Indian Health Center in Fort Washakie. A gifted mechanic, there really wasnt anything he couldnt fix. He kept all the vehicles he ever owned in running condition as well as anything with a motor. He loved hunting and fishing in his younger years until his health slowed him down. He knew his way around the mountains like the back of his hand. He was up in the mountains multiple times a year for hunting, firewood gathering, which he did by himself, and camping. We were blessed with the life this strong, hard-working man provided for his family.

On June 25, 1959, he married the love of his life, Patricia Carmen Hanway. Of this union, they had 3 children, Edith Joyce, Levi Tosi Jr, and Julie Lynn. They were married for 35 years before her passing.

Levi is survived by his 3 children: Edith (Wayne), Levi Jr (Arreana), and Julie (Ardie); grandsons, Marley K. Plumb, Theron J. Surrell, Dave Bell Jr. (Jade) and Lincoln Begay III; great grandchildren, Baeden Brae, Zyana M, and Bennett Levi; numerous nieces and nephews, as well as friends that became family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia; parents; grandparents; and siblings Regina Hill, Sterling Hill, Angelita Simon, and Wilford Hill Sr; aunts Melissa Olivas and Louise Norman.
Poppa, you were so loved and respected here on earth. You leave a void that will eventually be filled with loving memories and peace knowing that you lived a good long life and will continue to do so in heaven. Your strength and wisdom did not go unnoticed.

A special thanks to those that helped and watched over him these past few years: Vickie Engavo, Becky Bercier, Trena Watkins and Shannon Watkins-Friday. I apologize for any missed people because I know there were so many more. Please know we appreciate everybody that was a part of his life.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, August 7, 2019 at Blessed Sacrament Parish in Ft. Washakie, Wyoming.
