Barney Michael Orand passed away at home on May 31, 2023, with family by his side.
Barney was born May 29, 1945, to Asa Monroe Orand and Flora (Florence) Grace Richardson in Brownwood, Texas. As a child, his family moved from state-to-state living in Texas, California, Colorado, and Idaho until finally ending up in Billings, Montana when he was 16 years old. He called Billings home for the rest of his life. In 1976, he married Sue Johnson Antonson and spent the next four decades building a life full of the stability and comfort missing in his younger years.
It seems an impossible task to condense a life so large into a few short paragraphs. Barney was drafted into the Army in 1966 and spent the next two years in service to his country; he was proud of his service record and security clearance. He began a career as an interstate trucker early in life and worked for a number of companies before he became an owner-operator in 1978 covering more than two million miles. Barney was a man of many talents who took pride in his workmanship whether it be navigating a truck across the country, landscaping his yard, remodeling a room, or organizing his garage. He was most content when working on a project, especially if it involved working shoulder-to-shoulder with his grandsons or his friends.
Barney is survived by his wife Sue, daughters Wanda Antonson (Rick) Imlay and Michelle Hoeschen, grandsons Lynn Stamm and Alex McNulty, 2 great-grandchildren, brother Allen (Gay) Orand, sister Donna (Ed) Booth and half-sister Robin Randall as well as several nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Asa and Flora (Florence) and brother-in-law Michael Pilliard.
The family would like to thank friends and neighbors who supported Barney in his final days. Special thanks to his friend Greg Shaffer, sister-in-law Carol Finnicum, son-in-law Rick Imlay, and Stillwater Hospice for the care and comfort they provided Barney.
There will be a graveside ceremony at 1:00 pm on Friday, June 9, 2023, at the Yellowstone National Cemetery, 55 Buffalo Trail Road, Laurel, MT followed by a time for sharing memories at the Imlay home.
