Daniel Satran

Daniel Satran Jr. (Dan), a caring father, grandfather, brother and friend, died surrounded by family on July 24 in Billings, Montana. He was born May 5, 1950, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Dan was co-owner of Bayfield County Publishing, Washburn, Wisconsin, from 1979 to 1989.

Dan and Leslie Satran Blaize published three weekly newspapers in Bayfield County, Wisconsin: the “Bayfield County Press”, “Iron River Pioneer” and “Washburn Times”. Dan was known for his quality photos and newspaper column, “Off the Cuff”, which highlighted his personal experiences and Bayfield County's cultural activities. In 1989, the three papers were combined into one publication, the “Bayfield County Journal”. Dan's unique voice and enthusiasm helped to shine a light on all the activities and beauty that northern Wisconsin offers.

Dan continued as an editor at the merged paper until 1992. At that time, he became editor of the Sauk Prairie Star.

Dan followed a family tradition of publishing newspapers. His father, Dan Satran, Sr., and his grandfather, Joseph Satran, also published Wisconsin newspapers.

Dan earned a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He enjoyed walking along the shores of Lake Superior, taking pictures, skiing, playing with his dogs, listening to music, singing in the church choir and spending time with family and friends. He was active in the Washburn Lions Club, Washburn Cultural Center and Sauk Prairie Relay for Life.

His sister, Jane Guldan, and parents, Daniel Satran, Sr., and Betty Satran, preceded him in death. Survivors include his son, Daniel Satran, III (Hsin), grandson, Hudson; daughter, Jessica Rohrer (Zachary), and grandchildren, Emma, Isaac, and Samuel; siblings, Richard Satran (Alison); Jone Satran, John Satran, Thomas Satran (Tina); Mitzi Satran (Dave); and Tim Satran; Mike Guldan, and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service in Wisconsin is pending. Memorials can be sent to the Washburn Cultural Center or St. Louis Catholic Church, Washburn.
