Dorothy (Dottie) Irene Barnes (nee Ferry) was born Nov. 28, 1926, to Thomas and Mary Ferry. After losing her mother at a young age, her father remarried Vera Ferry, who raised Dottie from the age of 2 years.


Most recently living in Council Bluffs, Iowa, she was born in Staten Island, NY. She married Eugene Michael Finigan on July 4, 1947, that marriage brought a daughter, Dorothy Jean. Dottie and Gene divorced in 1959 and Dottie remarried in 1962 to Roland Henry Barnes. They moved to Billings, Montana in 1964. The family grew with the birth of 3 sons, Roland William, Thomas James, and Timothy Lynn. She divorced again in 1986.


Dottie lived an independent life. She worked for many years at the Yellowstone Racquet Club, running the nursery and touching so many more lives. She was an active member of the Laurel Hometown Troops for many years. Her church home had been St. Pius X since 1964.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Ferry, Mary Ferry, and Vera Ferry as well as her siblings, Viola Ferry, Raymond Ferry, Harold Ferry, Jay Ferry, and Mary Siminski; two grandchildren, Tiffany Barnes, and Cade Prophet.


She is survived by her children, Dorothy Finigan Prophet of Sandpoint, ID; Roland Barnes (Traci) of Billings, MT; Thomas Barnes (Lisa) of Council Bluffs, IA, and Timothy Barnes (Robin) of Billings, MT. Her grandchildren, Mikaela, Thomas, Aubreh, Dane, Joseph, Brynn, Sarah, Karlie, Mranda, Malishyia, and Timmy. Also 20 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Barnes, as we always called her, helped raise both our daughters in the tiny Yellowstone Raquet Club nursery. While I was blessed with a few hours a week to play tennis, Dorothy lovingly helped my girls put together puzzles, play nicely with others, and in the case of my younger daughter, take her first steps, something Dorothy would cheerfully remind me of every time I saw her in the years since! I was extremely fond of this lovely woman, small in stature but so capable in the ways of caring and training small children.

We will always be grateful to Dorothy for her compassionate, nurturing care of our children in the Yellowstone Racquet Club nursery! She then would spent several Halloween nights at our house handing out candy if we were gone. Her dedication, smiling face, beautiful attitude and extreme interest in her work made us and our children so comfortable being apart at times. We often think about her. Dorothy was a loving, caring energetic lady. We lived next door on Winchell for a number of years and enjoyed knowing her and you three boys. Those were the days!! We were so saddened to learn of her passing and share in your loss. We remember her fondly. Rose and Bob Fritz
