Marilyn Monroy

Our beloved mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend was called home by our heavenly father, surrounded by family at Billings Clinic Hospital on October 3rd, 2023. Marilyn Plainbull-Monroy was known as Utte'ikee “Sees Weasels” given to her by Old Man Plain Feather. Marilyn was born February 11th, 1961 in Crow Agency, Montana, the daughter of the late Larry Plainbull and Gwendolyn Old Elk-Plainbull. She was a clan member of the Greasy Mouth and a child of the Sore Lip. She is a descendant of Chief Plenty Coups and Curley the Scout.

Marilyn was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church. In her early years she attended St. Charles Missions School and graduated from Plenty Coups High School in 1979. Marilyn married her high school sweetheart the late Carlos Monroy Se. on June 16, 1984. They made their home in Pryor, MT, where they raised their children.

While in school she participated in cheerleading, volleyball, and excelled in basketball. She held various jobs beginning with Pryor Public School, Pryor Store, St. Johns, Lutheran home for 29 years. Various nursing homes and was currently employed by Walmart for 8 years. In 1988 she received her nursing degree from Billings vocational institute while she was pregnant with her fifth child.

As a mother and wife, Marilyn was dedicated to her family and her home. Her devotion to her family was evident in the numerous ways in which she gave of herself, whether it was caring for her grandchildren, attending their sporting events, birthday parties, school function, and family get-togethers. Those fortunate enough to have her in their lives felt a sense of comfort, support, and security as a result of her presence.

During her spare time, she enjoyed beading, watching her grandchildren play basketball, and watching the sports of those she loved. Despite her busy schedule, she found time to read. Her favorite television programs were the Hallmark channel, Ellen, Days of Our Lives, and Joel Osteen. Baking, picking berries, and taking trips with her grandchildren were among her favorite things to do. Beadwork was one of her of most well-known talents during her lifetimes. Due to her ability to complete projects quickly, she was often referred to as a machine. The work she performed as a homemaker was of significant importance to her, as a devoted woman of faith. There was no doubt that her family was the most important part of her life, and she always ensured that they were well cared for. She took great pride in her role as a mother and grandmother.

There was no doubt that was a dedicated fan of the Plenty Coups Warriors and Lady Warriors. Eventually becoming a fan of the Billings Central Rams (when Carlotta & Kathleen were playing), The Hardin Bulldogs, United Tribes, and most recently was super excited to watch Famous play at MSU Billings. As a mother and grandmother, she had an unconditional love for her children and grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband Carlos Monroy Sr., son George “Ice” Monroy, and her father Larry Plainbull Sr.. Her nephew winters Plainbull. Her niece Katrina Plainbull. Grandparents, Calen and Miranda Plainbull and George and Evelyn Old Elk. Aunts Irene Good Luck and Marella Greybull. Mother and Father-in-law Theresa and Kenneth Haun and sister-in-law Carla Wilson.

Marilyn is survived by her children, sons: Carlos (Tawnya) Monroy Jr., Adam Monroy, Kevin (Adelia) Monroy. Daughters: Carlotta (Cody) Ware, Kathlene (Travis) Dorsey, Calista (Trindell) Dawes. Adopted children: Kendra Walker. Her mother Gwendolyn Old Elk-Plainbull, brothers: Bert (Cornelia) Plainbull, Fred (Katrina) Plainbull, Tex (Coty) Good Luck, and Dean (Almeda) Good Luck. Sisters: Laurie Plainbull-Door, and Dorcella (Greg) Half. Adopted siblings: Carol Heath, Sr. Marya, Norma, and Channis Whiteman, Brad and Lorreta Crooked Arm, Margarita Bull Tail. God Daughter: Sarah Door.

Grandchildren: Darrelyn Lefthand (Jacie Hogan) Darnell, Famous Lefthand, Melvin (Tia) Ware and Hannah (Colton) Roebling, Austin (Vanna), Rael, Tronson Monroy, Andrew, Korey, Bella Donna Dorsey, Carlena, Laliyah Dawes, George, KC, Akaiha, Kevelynn, Imani, and Zadie Monroy.

Great-Grandchildren: Kessler, Carlido, and Amaria Monroy. Capri and Ice Lefthand, Russell, Lauren and Winston Ware and Ryker Roebling.

She had numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly, Bartell, Miranda, Ciera, Robyn, Gina Turns Plenty, Katrinda, Sarah, Caleb, Buddy, Samantha, Gwendy, Sabrena, Abram, Reuben (Sharmanda), Alvin (Valerie) Plainbull. Special nieces Farah Door, and Aliyah Plainbull.

Special friends: Sharon Fleming, Cheryl Bermes, Ramona Craighill, Mary Goes Ahead, Janet Stewart, Beth Brush, Christina Tsosie, and Ava Sanchez.

Extended family includes:

Maternal: Old Elk Birdinground, Shane, takes Horse, Other Medicine, Comes Up, Costa, Rock Above, Spotted Bear, White Dirts, Onion, Chief Child, Wilson, Hunts The Arrow, and Fighter. Paternal: Plainfeather, Good Luck, Dawes, Laforge, Goes Ahead, Round Face, Horn, and Bulltail.
