Joseph Cadwell

Joseph Daniel Cadwell, 88, of Billings, Montana, passed away peacefully on December 14, 2011, of pneumonia. He was born March 28, 1923 in Anaconda, Montana to Lyman Grover and Ethel Alice Lyons Cadwell in a home built by his grandfather Lyons. Joe was the youngest of three boys. His youth can be best described as fun, with lots of “rough housing”, street games, always ready for a basketball pick-up game, did track and field, football, and was an altar boy. After attending both Catholic and public schools in Anaconda, Joe continued his education at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska on a football scholarship until World War II where he was accepted to the Army Air Force Cadet Training Program where he became a B24 pilot. Joe continued his education at the University of Idaho, Kansas State College and received his Bachelor's of Science Degree in Aeronautical Engineering at Aeronautical University in Chicago, and his Master's of Science Degree in Applied Mechanics at the University of Connecticut. Joe enjoyed a 37 year career in aircraft engineering and became a known specialist in wind tunnel testing throughout the United States and parts of Europe. At invitation, he was one of the major speakers to present a lecture series on Cryogenic Wind Tunnels at the Von Karman Institute in Brussels, Belgium and at the NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. In addition, he contributed to many publications related to wind tunnel testing and design. Joe was a family man. He was married to his first love, Ruthie Brandt, in 1941 until her death in 1961. They had a daughter, Betty. In time, Joe found a new love, Marion Driscoll, and they married in 1963. At the time of his death they had been married 48 years. Joe and Marion's life together was filled with travel throughout the world, mutual interests in the arts, flying in their private plane, avid interest in high school, college and professional football, basketball and baseball, enjoyed a cozy cabin in Big Bear, with skiing being their sport which they enjoyed with daughter Betty and grandchildren, Scott, Julie, Mark & Annie, and many dear friends, including Pete and Maria. Joe will be remembered as a dedicated and committed friend to all his peers in the aerodynamic world, and a man of integrity and faith to his family. Joe's greatest legacy is his beloved family. He leaves behind his wife, Marion; daughter Betty (Bob) Barry, six grandchildren, Scott (Melissa) Mathews, Julie Loveall, Mark (Christina) Richardson, Annie (Jonathan) Kaye, Liza (Dieter) Hissin and Shannon Barry, and 12 great-grandchildren. Service: Vigil Services will be 7:00 p.m. Monday at Dahl Funeral Chapel. Memorial Services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at St. Bernard's Catholic Church.
