Betty Steinmetz

December 13, 1933 - August 26, 2025

Obituary

With deep sadness our family announces the passing of our beloved mother, Betty June (Michael) Steinmetz, AKA GG. Mom was born on December 13, 1933, in Billings, MT to Jacob and Marie Michael.

Mom grew up in Silesia, graduating from Edgar High School in 1951. After graduation she moved to Billings to work as a bank teller. On March 14, 1953, she married Arthur Steinmetz, and they had four children: Steve, Vicki, Patricia and Paul.

Together they farmed for 25 years in the Silesia area. After leaving the farm she became a waitress, first at Fort Rockvale and then retiring from the Owl Cafe.

After Dad’s passing in 2004 she decided it was time for a change. Betty and her daughter, Vicki, built a house in Park City in 2009, living there together until Vicki’s passing in January 2025. In January 2025 Mom moved to Tendernest in Laurel.

Mom’s hobbies included tending to her beautiful rose garden, often having people stop by to inquire about certain plants, swap seeds or share clippings. She was a member of the Red Hat Club and enjoyed having lunch and gossiping with the girls. She attended Seniors in Park City on Wednesdays to socialize and play bingo.

Mom was always dressed to the nines, she went shopping at any chance she got and couldn’t pass up a good deal, including the 99-cent miniskirt she bought at the age of 91. Mom also loved to make cabbage rolls and apple pies, there were many discussions over who got the last roll or piece.

Later in life Mom took many bus trips to Deadwood, SD where she loved to enjoy a good glass of wine and playing the buffalo game on the machines. She traveled to Hawaii, Vegas and Seaside, OR many times with her family. Mom was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in her early 80s which she fought with style and grace, never letting it slow her down.

We want to thank Mariah and Frank for the love and care they gave GG this last year and for adopting her as family.

On August 23rd she was admitted to the hospital with Pneumonia and on August 26th in true GG fashion, surrounded by loved ones, she said, “why the hell am I still hanging around” and decided it was time to meet her husband after 20 years apart, at the gates of Heaven.

We know Dad was standing there waiting for her saying, “where the hell have you been!” and Vicki was standing there ready with GG’s hot cup of coffee with lots of creamer.

GG is survived by her children; Steve (Brenda) Steinmetz of Byron, WY, Patricia (Doug) Hedges of Park City and Paul (Gail) Steinmetz of Joliet; 8 grandchildren and their significant others and 14 great grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Jane Taylor, brother, Walter Michael and numerous nieces and nephews.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Marie Michael, husband, Arthur Steinmetz, daughter, Vicki Bangart and siblings, Ruth Krug and Bill Michael and her beloved dog, Pepper.

Funeral services will take place at Dahl Funeral Home in Billings, MT on Friday, September 5th at 10:30am followed by a luncheon. Following the luncheon, there will be a short service at the Laurel Cemetery.

Memorials can be made of one’s choice.
