Glen Hertz

Glen D. Hertz, 93, of Billings, Montana died March 12, 2024, at Sweetwater Retirement Community with his son at his bedside. He was born on April 25, 1930, in New Leipzig, North Dakota to Emanuel and Pauline (Reiser) Hertz. He graduated from New Leipzig High School in 1948 and was later drafted into the U.S. Army. Because of his typing abilities learned during high school, after basic training in South Carolina, he attended Supply School earning the rank of corporal. Soon after he was transferred to West Germany serving as a Supply Sergeant during the Korean War (1951-53). Upon completing his service, he returned to North Dakota.

In 1955, he moved to Billings and stayed until his death. He worked for Saunders Lumber and then Yellowstone County, transferring abandoned vehicles within the county for recycling. His family and friends remember his love of flying radio-controlled model airplanes. He built and flew 93 airplanes in total. He was a member of the Billings Flying Mustangs Club from the early 1970s through 2020. He participated in Fun Fly events at many aircraft clubs throughout Montana and Wyoming. In addition to flying, he enjoyed lure fishing on the West Rosebud and Yellowstone Rivers.

In 1978, Glen wed Dottie Tanner (his second marriage) enjoying her love and companionship until her death in 2014. Glen and Dottie enjoyed their Sunday drives, their annual outing to Cooke City, and many road trips to visit family throughout the United States. Because of the support of Jeff, Martha and Stephen Tanner, Glen was able to remain in Billings these last ten years since Dottie's death, for which Glen's son, Mark, is very grateful.

Glen was preceded in death by his parents; seven half siblings; an older brother, Almore; and his wife Dottie. He is survived by his sister, Marian Didier of Houston, Texas; his son Mark (Elaine) Hertz of Longmont, Colorado; grandson Dr. Christopher Hertz M.D., of Albuquerque, New Mexico; grandson Joshua (Samantha Bronow) Hertz of Laurel, Maryland; stepson Steve (Linda) Tanner of Parker, Colorado; stepdaughter Karen Tanner (Joe Stribley) of Billings; stepson Jeff (Martha) Tanner of Billings; step-grandchildren Theresa, Whitney, Tanner and Stephen; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held from 11 am to 12 pm on Thursday, March 21st, at Dahl Funeral Chapel followed by fellowship with family and friends. Glen will be buried next to Dottie at Mountainview Cemetery at 2 pm.
