Larry Walter

Larry Allan Walter passed away on June 10, 2024, surrounded by his loving wife and family. Larry was born in Billings, MT on September 23, 1940, to J. Herman and Eileen Clark Walter. He was the oldest of five children and lived in Billings his entire 83 years. He started his life on a farm (near the current Texas Roadhouse) and moved to town when he was five. He had many tales of the shenanigans he shared with the neighborhood kids on the 800 block of Custer Ave. He sold greeting cards and his mom's pies for his first job. When he was 12 the family moved to Billings Heights (two houses from the old Zentz Lumber Co. where his dad was the manager). There, he started working after school and summers doing many lumberyard jobs.

Larry went to work as a meter reader for the City of Billings when he was 21. He became an Electrical Apprentice to the Electrical Supervisor for the City and eventually obtained his Master Electrician License. He later became the Electrical Supervisor for the City's Water and Wastewater Plants. He retired after 34 years of service. Since he was always a “Want To Be Farmer” he took the opportunity to work for his brother-in-law, Harvey Fox, for 12 years until Harvey quit farming. Even then, he continued to fill in as a truck driver during fall harvests of sugar beets and corn for other farmers.

Larry graduated from Billings Senior High School in 1958 and met Lorraine Schumm in 1959. They were married on January 28, 1961. They enjoyed 63 years together raising their 3 children; Gary, Scott, and LaRae, and spent many hours camping, fishing, hiking, taking family vacations, and enjoying many other activities as a family. After the kids were grown, Larry and Lorraine took many wonderful trips traveling to Europe, Ireland, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Central America, Eastern Caribbean, and all 50 States.

Larry was a dedicated and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson Adam Walter, his brothers-in-law Harvey Fox and Bill Kapptie, sister-in-law Mary Jane Spiroff, many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. He is survived by his wife Lorraine, his children: Gary (Tonia) Walter, Scott (Lori) Walter, and LaRae (Mike) Longbottom and 8 Grandchildren (+3 bonus) and 3 great-grandsons (+7 bonus great-grandchildren), his siblings: Wayne (Rita) Walter, Kelly (Sandi) Walter, Melody Fox and Merilee (Bob) Hanson, his sister-in-law Dorrine Kapptie and brother-in-law Ray Spiroff. He also leaves behind Aunt Ruth Armstrong and uncles Kenneth (Barbara) Walter and Maurice Tunby as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He will be deeply missed but now will have the answer to the question “What I'm worried about is, what's for dessert?”

A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 10, at 10:00 am at Dahl Funeral Chapel in Billings, MT.
