Robert Allen

Robert “Dr. Bob” Lee Allen, 82, of Billings, Montana, died Monday, August 19, 2024, surrounded by family and friends. He was born October 2, 1942, in Ravenna, Ohio to Edward Allen and Valeria (Roberto). He was the middle of three children. He graduated from Ravenna High School in 1962. He met and married Dianne Ahrens on October 7th, 1967 in Kent, Ohio. Robert was an avid outdoorsman and artist in the Billings Area. He worked as a visual information specialist for the Bureau of Land Management for over 30 years. His artwork is featured in many government buildings and national parks. Robert retired from the BLM at age 60 in 2002. He remained very active in retirement and was a member of the Billings Rod and Gun Club until his passing.

Robert was larger than life. He was funny, obstinate, artistic, loud, curious, driven, and outdoorsman. He had many nicknames in his life, in his youth he had the nickname T.D. (Touchdown) for the many points he scored for his high school football team. This nickname remained with him throughout his life. He also went by “Dr. Bob” because he was famous for giving advice on just about everything- gardening, hunting, painting, medical issues, and cooking the perfect brisket. He was also known as “Papa Smurf” to all his fellow hunters because of his sage advice and willingness to help anyone. He was a very talented man who intuitively knew how to do everything from rebuilding engines, carving stone sinks, and playing the guitar. What he didn't know, he learned. He sculpted amazing bronzes and painted many amazing watercolor paintings.

Robert is preceded in death by his parents Edward and Valeria Allen. He is survived by his wife Dianne, his daughter Monica Birko (Alan) and his sons Douglas and Brandon, his brothers, Edward (Waltraud, deceased), Larry (Joanie), and their children Amy Williams (Rob) and Jason Allen (Mary). He is also survived by his grandchildren Ashley Birko, Braden Birko, Ryun Allen, Tyler Allen, Ezra Long (Julia), Jake Long (Sheanna), Izaiah Long (Krista), Kylonna Parkins (Carter), and many great-grandchildren.

There will be no funeral service held at this time. A celebration of life for Bob will take place in Billings, Montana in July 2025. Notifications will be sent out at that time.
