Charles Hauptman

July 25, 1980 - August 20, 2024

Obituary

On August 20, 2024, we said goodbye to our beloved son and brother, Charlie. Charles David Hauptman was born July 25, 1980, to James and Linda Hauptman, joining brother, Jim, and sister Katherine. Charlie attended St. Francis and Rimrock schools, graduating from Billings Senior High in 1999.

As a young child, he was charming, gregarious, and garnered many friends. He was a gifted athlete, playing football, basketball, and excelling in soccer at Billings Senior High. Go Broncs!

Charlie spent the majority of his adult life in Portland, Oregon, graduating with an associate degree from Portland Community College and continuing his education at Portland State University. He worked at a variety of jobs, the last with the U.S. Postal Service.

In Portland, he made a myriad of friends who became friends with one another. One of them described him as the hub in an enormous circle of friends. At a surprise birthday party, over one hundred attended.

Charlie is survived by his parents, Jim and Linda, brother, Jim, sister, Katherine (Bob Reed), nieces, Faith and Gradee Hauptman, and nephews, Eli and Hayden Reed.

Memorials may be made to The Pantry at Billings Senior High School, located at 425 Grand Avenue, Billings, MT 59101, or any charity of one's choice.

Some in our society measure a person's success by the amount of wealth accumulated or an elite career attained. Charlie's success in life transcends those evaluations as measured by the lives he touched, the huge number of friends he had that loved him and cared for him, and the fact that he will be greatly missed by all of us. We love you Charlie! Ira Forleiter

What does it mean to leave a legacy? “The definition of a lasting legacy is the positive impact your life has on other people - friends, colleagues, even strangers. Your legacy is the sum of the personal values, accomplishments, and the actions that resonate with the people around you. You were sincerely an amazing human being Charlie. You made everyone around you better person. You were truly my very first friend I met when I moved to Oregon. You and Theo immediately took me under your wing. We’ve been friends for 20+ years and I’ll never forget you Charlie. You never got to meet my daughter Charlotte but her nickname is Charlie! I’m crying as I write this! I love you buddy and you will always have a place in my heart. Thank you for being you and being such a kind and loving person, you’ve truly made an impact in not only mine but hundreds of other peoples lives. You are seriously one of the good ones and I was grateful to call you a friend. I love you Charlie. Chris Sabroe (Fresno)

I didn't get to know Charlie as much as I would've liked to, but when I moved in with Theo Brown in PDX around 2013 I was privileged to get introduced to the massive community that Theo and Charlie made for themselves, and to this day I have not felt so comfortable and welcomed by an inordinate amount of people that I hardly knew at first. I fondly remember going to Dick's Kitchen with Theo and Charlie and a countless rotation of events, holidays, and everything in between that managed to have both the largest crew of people I have ever been around consistently, as well as an uncompromising aura of love and togetherness. I have yet to meet a cooler group of people, all held together by connections to Charlie, Theo, and each other. Charlie truly embodied my PDX experience, and my heart goes out to his family and all of his friends, whether I have met you before or not. Do yourself a favor and try to channel Charlie's unrelenting energy and positivity for yourself, and anyone you cross paths with - we all need more Charlie in the world!

Charlie was always supportive and nonjudgmental. He helped me in many ways, and was a solid friend and person. I’m going to miss you, Charlie.
