Leo Heyd

Leo Raymond Heyd passed away peacefully at home on August 26th, 2024, at the age of 98 after being admitted to hospice care. He was born in Long Lake, South Dakota on April 6th, 1926, to Christian and Christine (Sandmeier) Heyd. He moved to Montana with his parents in the fall of 1929 and grew up on a ranch in the Ismay, Montana area. Leo graduated from Ismay High School in 1947 with 2 other students. He served in the Army during WWII from November 17th, 1944, until August 7th, 1946, and he was honorably discharged as a T/5 (Technician 5 grade) in the 3rd Division Combat Engineers.

Leo married the love of his life Margaret Conwell in Red Lodge, MT at St. Agnes Catholic Church on June 23rd, 1952. They moved to Billings, MT later that year where they built their home and became active members of Holy Rosary Catholic Church. He worked in construction until 1955, then at Big Sky Linen Supply as an out-of-town route salesperson until his retirement in 1989.

Leo was an amazing carpenter and loved working on building projects. He had an awe-inspiring green thumb that led to a fantastic garden every year. He always enjoyed traveling and he and Margaret enjoyed many trips together. Leo loved spending time with his family as they meant the world to him. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Leo is survived by his four children: Robert Heyd of Kearney, NE and his three children Zachary (Julia) Heyd, Emily Heyd, and Valerie Heyd; Rosemary (Terry) Young of Billings, MT and their daughter Shaylin (Keone) Wilson; Lawrence Heyd of Midlothian, VA and his daughter Lauren Heyd; and Jane (Kevin) Markovich of Butte, MT and their children Erin (Brandon) Schlunegger, Daniel (Sara) Markovich, and Thomas (Danielle) Markovich. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren Leo, Henry, Finn, Brooks, Lane, and his nephew Tom (Diana) Hudak along with many other nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years Margaret (Conwell) Heyd, his parents, sisters Ella and Lorraine, and Brothers Lorenz and Marvin.

Leo, thank you for your dedication to your wife, family, and country. You were always there for us, and you will be missed and loved forever.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, September 12, 2024, at 11:00 am at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Billings, MT with visitation beginning at 10:00 am. Luncheon to follow the funeral service.
