Joey Starr

Joey Gay Starr, 73, passed away on August 31st, 2024 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her husband and children at the time of her passing.

She was born on January 17, 1951, in Billings, Mt to Lydia and Gideon Gunsch. Joey graduated from Billings Senior High School and remained in Billings throughout her life to raise her family.

Over the years Joey worked as a crosswalk guard for Broadwater School and worked in the lunch room at Elder Grove, where she loved being with the kids. She was a true animal lover and enjoyed watching and feeding her birds and bunnies. She read countless books and when her health permitted she enjoyed being on the Boulder surrounded by mountains.

When Joey became a grandmother, her true love became her grandson, John Chapman. She loved him beyond words and enjoyed being with him every minute she could. Weekends at grandma's were the best!

Joey is survived by her husband of 56 years, David L. Starr, and her two children, David W. Starr and Laurie Starr-Jones (Jeff), grandson John D. Chapman (Kimberlyn), sister Durien McGourty, brother-in-law's Bill Starr (Carol) and John Starr(Kim), sister-in-law Carol Starr(Bud) as well as several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her brother Gilbert Gunsch, mother Lydia Gunsch and father Gideon Gunsch.

Mom did not want a memorial service. Instead, she chose to be cremated and her ashes spread in the mountains along with her dog (Licorice).

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Help for Homeless Pets in Billings, MT.
