Ronald Kangas

It is with deep, deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Ron Kangas, aged 65, on September 8, 2024. Born August 14, 1959, Ron, nicknamed “Gator” because he loved the cartoon “Wally, the Swinging Alligator in the Swamp, had a huge, generous heart and a fierce loyalty for his family and his friends. He was a much-loved son, brother and uncle.

Ron defended the Kangas name and wore it proudly all his life. His adventurous spirit defined his life-long friendships with people all over the world.

From an early age, Ron showcased exceptional athleticism, excelling in baseball and football, the latter earning him a scholarship to Concordia. He was also a Ducks Unlimited member and an avid, well-traveled fisherman. Those fishing trips provided thrilling and hilarious stories and, most importantly, formed the unbreakable bonds Ron shared with so many people across America and Canada.

A gifted cook and host, Ron turned every holiday and special occasion into a joyous memory. When he asked, “What flavor of cheesecake do you want?”, you knew he would create something so delicious and sweet you could taste his love for you. He welcomed with an open house, an open heart and open arms.

In the last years of his life, Ron enjoyed helping customers find the perfect fishing gear at Cabela's in Billings. For a multitude of reasons and for so many people, his passing is a profound loss.

Ron is preceded in death by his father, Marvin and by his older brother, Rick.

He is survived by his beloved mother Dawn, two brothers, Randy (Julie) and John (Tracy) and by his sister Terra Jochems (Marv). He also leaves behind three nephews, one niece, four grandnephews and three grandnieces—all who he spoiled as much as possible for one uncle to do.

Ron's Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, October 19, at 1:00 p.m. at Lake Hills Golf Club. Feel free to wear your Bobcat merchandise in honor of Ron's love for the team.
