Joann Harper

Joann R. Harper, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, resilience, and cherished memories. Joann's beloved, faithful loving companion Amigo, a Chihuahua of 14.5 years followed with her to heaven.

Born on July 26, 1939, in Baker, MT, to Melcher P. Herbst and Carolyn Schweigert, Joann's journey began in a small-town setting before her family relocated to Billings, MT. She graduated from high school in 1957 and pursued her passion for beauty and cosmetology, earning her license from Acme Beauty College in 1958. Joann owned and operated her own salon, where she spent years making people feel beautiful, inside and out.

In 1965, Joann married Ronald C. Hansen, and together they welcomed two children: Todd C. Hansen in 1965 and Tammy A. Hansen in 1966. Joann and Ron built a life in Billings until their paths diverged in 1978.

Joann later found love again with Robert D. Harper II, whom she married in 1980. Bob's career with the Montana Lottery took them to Helena, where he eventually became the director of sales in 1989. They shared many happy years together until Bob's passing on December 19, 1999.

A dedicated and hardworking woman, Joann spent over 25 years as a receptionist, bringing warmth and kindness to every workplace, including Monarch's Clothing, Falcon Press Publishing, Luxan & Murfitt Law Firm, and finally, the Montana State Legislature during its sessions.

Joann called Helena home until 2014, when she returned to Billings to be closer to family. She was the heart of every holiday gathering and family vacation, filling each moment with love and laughter. Her absence leaves an unfillable void, as daily phone calls, Zoom chats, and cherished visits will never be the same.

Joann is survived by her loving children: Todd and Tina Hansen and their three children—TJ and Maggie Hansen with their sons, Henry and Hudson; Tyler and Kristi Hansen with their son, Tyler Jr.; and Taelor and Clint Kapphan with their children, Tallie and Roanyn Kapphan. Her daughter, Tammy Wittren, and her partner, Steve Burleson, along with their beloved dog, Chester, will forever hold Joann's love in their hearts. She also leaves behind her devoted sisters, Diane Jackson and Jeanette Jauss, along with their children, all of whom shared an unbreakable bond with Joann, speaking daily for over 20 years.

Joann's legacy is one of love, strength, and an unwavering commitment to family. She will be deeply missed, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
