Obituary
James "Jim" Gerrit Schrotenboer, age 74, passed away on April 6, 2025, in Billings, Montana.
Jim was born on July 2, 1950, to Ralph and Helen Schrotenboer in Billings, where he remained a lifelong resident. He graduated from Billings Senior High, where he was known not only for his academic excellence, especially his talent with numbers—but also for his competitive spirit. Jim was a standout wrestler, winning several matches and earning championships in his weight class during his high school years.
A true sportsman at heart, Jim stayed active throughout his life. He competed in local bowling, pool, and golf leagues and spent countless hours at Stewart Park playing softball for Chalet Market. An enthusiastic outdoorsman, Jim found joy in fishing, hunting, and camping—pastimes he enjoyed outdoorsmanship with his father Ralph and his brothers, John and Jay.
Jim shared a chapter of his life with LaVonne Hammond, with whom he had three children: Roger Wayne (Jyton), Lee Thomas, and Erin Rae Schrotenboer. As a devoted father, Jim supported his children through more than 40 years of work as manager of Kwik Way. Later, he worked at McFinney's until his retirement in 2014.
His children cherish the many fond memories they shared with him- annual trips to Yellowstone, accompanying him to work where they were treated to junk food and felt like they had their own personal store, and countless family barbecues filled with laughter and love. Emerald lake was a beloved destination, serving as the backdrop for many treasured family outings.
He was a proud grandfather to Carson Hartman, who as a young child loved sitting on Jim's shoulders, pretending to drive, and playing cards with him. Jim cherished the time spent with Carson as a young man, passing down his wisdom in his quiet, thoughtful way. Discussing life, hunting and fishing. Jim inherited another grandson, Izrael Birdfarway, enjoying conversations about the outdoors and sports.
Those who knew Jim would describe him as tender-hearted, intelligent, and meticulous. Though reserved, when he spoke, people listened. He had a quiet strength and a generous spirit that touched the lives of those around him.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Helen; his brothers, John and Jay Schrotenober. He is survived by his children, Roger, Lee, and Erin; his grandchildren, Carson and Izrael; his nephews, Jason who was like his son. Brian, Matthew, and Trey Schrotenboer; his niece, Amy Bohannan; and his uncle, Harold Rowe, with whom he shared a special relationship.
Jim's presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy of quiet strength, love for family will live on in all who knew him.
