Calvin Coolidge Jefferson Jr, age 71, of Black Lodge, formerly of Lodge Grass, went to his heavenly home to be with his Lord and Savior on December 7, 2020. He was born on April 17, 1949, in Crow Agency, MT to Calvin Coolidge Jefferson Sr. and Eleanor Medicine Crow Jefferson.His Crow name “Akaashbaa'chiìchia,” Scout for the Enemy, was given to him by Crow elder White Arm. He was a member of the Greasy Mouth clan, a child of the Ties the Bundle, and a direct descendant of Chief Medicine Crow and Bull Chief. He attended Lodge Grass Elementary and received his high school diploma from Flandreau Indian School in 1967 where he participated in basketball and cross country. In 1968, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps attending bootcamp in San Diego, Ca. Then served at Headquarters Battalion, Marine Corps Supply Center and stationed in Albany, GA. It was there he received an honorable discharge as an E4 Corporal. He was a second-generation Veteran and his son, daughter, nephew, and grandson followed suit and became Veterans as well. In 1972, he relocated to Dallas, TX, where he helped raise his younger siblings, and worked for American Petrofina Oil. He also served as a wildland firefighter for many years. He earned a bachelor's degree in Human Services from Eastern Montana College in 1989 and went on to earn a Master of Social Work from Walla Walla School of Social Work in 2010. He then dedicated himself to a career in civil service, including 22 years with the Indian Health Service and three years with the Bureau of Indian Affairs. In 2009, he was elected to serve as the Vice-Chairman of the Crow Nation under the Black Eagle Administration. During his inauguration, his uncle, the late Joe Medicine Crow, gave him the right to speak. In 1985, he married the love of his life, Rebecca Sun Goes Slow. They made their home in the Black Lodge District and recently celebrated 35 years of union. He belonged to the Pentecostal church and enjoyed reading his Bible daily, attending Bible studies, and sharing his knowledge in the word of God. He was known for being kind, generous, and having a great sense of humor. He always had a story, often with a lesson to be learned, and he loved making people laugh with his jokes. He was the family historian and enjoyed teaching his family their lineage. He took on the role of the family patriarch from a young age and was there to guide, support, and encourage his large extended family. He highly respected, revered, and cared for his elders. As a respected individual in his own right, he was called upon by many families to give Crow Names to their children. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan and enjoyed traveling with his family to watch his team play. In his younger years, he followed the rodeo circuit bull riding from Montana to Texas. He also enjoyed roping with his horse, Rock. He treasured the opportunity to take his family traveling and particularly enjoyed watching the National Finals Rodeo. He was always proud to see his nieces and nephews participate in the Indian National Finals Rodeo. He liked to parade, it brought him great joy to prepare the horses for his granddaughters to also partake. He cherished the times he spent watching his granddaughters, Sienna and Lyndra play soccer, basketball, and volleyball and he had a particular soft spot for his baby granddaughter, Viera. He also loved to support all his grandchildren in their various activities. Preceded in death by his parents, adopted father Myers Black Eagle, Pastor Larry Little Owl, Sr., grandparents Lester (Mary Carpenter) Jefferson, Chester (Minnie Bear Crane) Medicine Crow, Uncles: William, George and Joseph Medicine Crow, Charles, Ben, Warren, Lester Jr, and Raymond Jefferson, Aunts: Bertha Bear Claw, Judith Big Lake, Zelda Stops. Sisters: Sheila (Russell) Wallace, Magdaline Moccasin, Cheryl Bear Claw, Charlene Black Eagle, Lois Jefferson. Brothers: Kennard, Truman, Charles “Benny”, Gavin, Harold and Jeffery Jefferson Sr., Cleveland Bell Rock, James Big Lake, Marlon and Larry Black Eagle, Son: Nathan Pretty Weasel. Adopted Daughter: Raven Whiteclay.Survivors include, his wife, Rebecca of 35 years, daughters: Vinnett (Justin) Flores, Celisa (Molly) Jefferson, sons: Hunter Jefferson, Calvin (Michelle) Jefferson III, Craig Old Crow, Jerry (Juanita) Jefferson, Monty (Amber) Pretty Weasel, Lawrence Pretty Weasel. God Son: Andrew House. His granddaughters Sienna, Lyndra, and Viera Flores, Sharla (Joseph) Buffalo III, Autumn Jefferson, Naytahlia, Amaurie, Laila Pretty Weasel, Amberly Shigley, Camden Cole. Grandsons: Dylan (Julia) Jefferson, Jordan Jefferson, Terrell, Ethan, Nathan, Jalen, Julian, Treyson, Owen,and Jevon Tobacco. Great-Grandchildren: Kimora Jefferson, Joni & Dean Buffalo. Adopted Children: Chris Anderson, Wesley Stops, Logan, Jezreal “Taylor” White Clay, Dusty (Kenasa) Gaddy, Diana (Felix) Thompson, Stormie Nelson, Miranda White Clay, Casaja (Elvin) Fritzler, Elena (Chase) Demery, Joelle Stops, Shawanda Biles, Vernice Ramirez, Cody Fox. Our family is large we apologize if we have forgotten anyone. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, December 11, 2020 in Crow Agency at the Crow Revival Center. Interment will be held at the Fairview Cemetery in Hardin, MT. Dahl Funeral Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.
