Phyllis Peters

Phyllis Ann Peters, a beautiful Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Auntie, and Friend; was born in Sisseton, South Dakota on February 8, 1940 to Martin Abraham and Sophie Issacs. She is an enrolled member of the Sisseton - Wahpeton Dakota Sioux tribe and member of the Big Lodge Clan through adoption. Phyllis went to the Other Side of Camp, with her loving husband by her side, on October 31, 2020 at the Billings Clinic. Phyllis attended high school at Flandreau Indian School in Flandreau, SD and received her high school diploma from Hardin High School in 1957. In 1956, Phyllis came to Crow Agency to help her aunt Marie Smart. While at a dance in Lodge Grass she met George Peters. On December 22, 1958, Phyllis and George married in Billings, MT - Celebrating 62 years together. Phyllis worked various jobs while raising her family. First, at the gas station in Ft. Smith, at the post office and at St. Labre Indian School's plastic factory located in Lodge Grass. After the family moved to Crow Agency, she was the head chef at Sun Lodge Restaurant. As well as a cook for Crow Public School. There she met her lifelong friends Florence Doyle, Tina Stewart and Regina Goes Ahead. In 1999-2003 Phyllis & George opened a family restaurant, The Crow's Nest, and later a coffee shop. From 1985 to 2020 Phyllis was employed by the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier the Reno Creek delivery route. Phyllis and George enjoyed the country. Favorite activities included herding alongside her husband, sheep, goats, horses, cattle, pigs, chickens, turkeys, dogs, and kids. Phyllis is preceded in death by her parents, her adopted mother Annette Birdinground, her brother Kenny Burshiem, brother in law Kenneth Adams and her grandson Lawren Myron Old Elk. Phyllis is survived by her husband George, her sisters Carol Adams, Mona (Harvey) Renville, Juanita Kirk, and Shirley Seely. Brothers Dean Abraham,Dennis Issacs Seely, Rocky Trankle, Clifford Birdinground, brother in law Carl Pease. Children Deana (Barry Hogan) Carol(Larry) Old Elk, Georgie (Bill) Joseph, Rose (Faron) Iron, William (Sheila) Peters, Traci Peters. Grandchildren George Stephen Peters, Stephanie (Wade) Bastrom, Larna (Lane) Old Elk- Spotted Elk, Stacey Parker, Zachary (Cassi) Bird Faraway, Luvenia Old Elk, Kaylene Fox, Dane (Erin) Bullinsight, Misty (Julio) Bird Faraway, Sissy Iron, Sophie (Brandon) Bouyer, Garner (Callie) Bouyer, Zach Iron, Erin (Calvin) Bouyer, Robyn Iron, Faron Iron Jr, Katelyn (Lane) Bouyer, Daniel (Moyer) Iron Lexis Hogan, Jake Ryder Peters. Great grandchildren Payton, Laryssa, Curtis, Bree, Nicole, Preston, Ayden ,Lexyn, Chezley, Zion, Tate, Judah, Jaymya, Kaliyah, Sophia, Hayden, Lawrence, Chet, Kenny, McKenna, Kaine, Hazel, Sawyer, Kyra, Leightyn, KyRie, Kemani, Ariyah, Kolby, Meadow, and Emmie. Adopted children John Kohn, David, Devereaux, & Jonathan Old Elk, Matt Harris, Mark Ashdown, Silas & Mellissa Counts, Savannah Cairns, Ellen Hill, Dion Shane, Virgil McCormick, Darryl Little Light, Ross, Stephen, Michelle & Flora Parker, Joel Seminole, and surviving grandchildren of Annette Birdinground Close friends, Beverly Big Man Charges Strong, Regina Goes Ahead, Micky Whiteman, Faith Faraway, Karen Watenbach, Debbi Gust, Catherine Hartung, Sister Juanita Humphrey, Letty Burgess, Betha Hogan, Phyllis Schinderline- Gaurdipee, and Jenny Parker. The Family would like to thank the Medical Staff at Crow/Northern Cheyenne Hospital, Billings Clinic Emergency and Intensive Care Units, and Dahl's Funeral Home; for going above and beyond for Grandma Phyllis while admitted to the hospital and for final arrangements. Please forgive us if we've failed to mention anyone during our time of bereavement, Phyllis was everyone's Grandma. As well as those who offered prayers, kind words and monetary donations. Viewing is scheduled for Wednesday November 4, 2020 at 1pm to 5 pm and Thursday November 5, 2020 1 pm to 8 pm in Billings, Montana at Dahl's Funeral Chapel. Funeral service to be held Friday November 6, 2020 at Veterans Cemetery at 11 am in Crow Agency, Montana.
