Phyllis Carter
December 03, 1950 - December 12, 2014
Obituary
Phyllis Ruth Carter ended her battle with cancer on December 12, 2014 at the RiverStone Hospice House in Billings, MT, surrounded by limitless friends and family. She was born in Lakeview, OR on December 3, 1950. As far as we are concerned she won her battle with cancer and is now laughing and smiling in spite of it all. Phyllis was a mother, horse lover, teacher, florist and an active member of Hope United Methodist Church. She was “Nonnie” to her grandson Gabriel with whom she had a very special bond. She supported and loved the arts, especially photography and the local theater where she spent many hours volunteering. She was a true pioneer woman in more ways than one. She took care of her ten and a half acre home for twenty plus years and paved the way in unconditional care for others. For example, finding housing and healthcare for a homeless man she befriended, and spending hours taking photos of high school seniors who could not afford professional Senior Portraits. Those who knew her will have many more examples; she was an unmatchable woman. Mrs. Carter is survived by her mother Dorothy Howard; brother and sister-in-law, Jeff and Melinda Howard of Lakeview, OR; sister and brother-in-law Patty and Ross Westgate of Paisley, OR; son Darrell Carter; daughter, son-in-law and grandson, Dawn, Dan and Gabriel Nickerson of Billings; brothers-in-law, Bose and Nancy Carter and David Carter of Northern California. Phyllis is also survived by many extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Don Carter and father Jim Howard. A memorial service will be held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 16 at Hope United Methodist Church. Donations in her honor may be made to Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch or a charity of one's choice. Arrangements are in the care of Dahl Funeral Chapel and memories may be shared with the family at www.dahlfuneralchapel.com

HELLO, I worked with you mother at the boys and girls ranch- I was one of those fortunate people who she became a friend. I was one of those who tried to swim at the ranch on our lunch hours. She coaxed me into the deep end of the pool and had me jumping into the deep end. I loved to stop and visit with her- as i had a house in shepherd- i could do that- I saw your mom the day before she left to take care of your grandmother. I felt like it was the best vist ever. She was always positive about everything and could make everything appear to be not a big deal- I am sorry to lose her in this life but know she is raising race horses and swimming like a fish somewhere where. She can have as many pets as she wants and care for as many children as she wishes- I can see her surrouned by little ones being told one of her stories. Thinking of you as I will not be able to attend the service. God bless you all
