Betty Hopkins

Betty Jane Hopkins, 89, passed away June, 27, 2016 in Sugarland, Texas. Born September 14, 1926 in Portland OR. She spent her childhood in Oregon, attending school in Medford. Her love of music developed at an early age and she carried that passion throughout her life. She graduated in 1944 from Medford High School, Medford OR and then attended Black Hills Teachers College and the University of Denver to study music. Betty married Curt Hopkins, the love of her life, on Oct 29, 1945 in Billings Mt. Being a military family, they were stationed in various places in the US and also spent a year in Guam. As a military wife, she often found herself in the role of a single parent. Betty would be the first to say she loved that time of her of life. She developed lifelong friends and could tell stories about the things she did and the places she lived. Those stories reflected the life of someone who made the best of where she was and embraced the challenges life threw her way. Making friends came very easy for Betty. She had many very close friends with whom she shared her love of bridge, Mahjongg, embroidery, and attending the symphony. There was a very special place in her heart for family. The time spent on the Stovall ranch as a child was particularly special. It was where she could enjoy the horses that she loved and spend time with her grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins. She continued to enjoy visiting the family ranch. Her cousins Jay & Juanita Stovall, their sons and their families meant a great deal to Betty. She spoke of them often and was always ready to share pictures and tell stories of time spent at the ranch. Betty is preceded in death by her parents Charles and Nellie (Stovall) Johnson, brother Charles Johnson Jr., and husband Curtis Hopkins. She is survived by her children Cherron Hopkins, Medford OR, Curt and (Thanh) Hopkins, Oceanside CA, Janelle and (Dave) Nelson, Richmond TX, and Steven and (Karin) Hopkins, Cheyenne WY. She also leaves behind 10 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren. Graveside services will be July 23, 2016 at 10 am at the Red Lodge cemetery in Red Lodge, MT. There will be a reception following at the St. Agnes fellowship hall, also in Red Lodge, MT. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Disabled Veterans or the charity of your choice. Arrangements are in the care of Dahl Funeral Chapel.
