Dione Bell Rock, Sr

Dione Jay Bell Rock, Sr. of Pryor, MT, went to the other side camp on Monday, February 8, 2016. Dione was born in Billings Montana on October 3, 1971 to Velma “Cookie” Whiteman, and James K. Bell Rock Sr. He was raised by his grandmother Josephine Whiteman. His Crow name was Daaxxbiichae Xalia (Old Bear), given to him by his late grandfather, Claude Dawes, Sr., he was a member of whistling water (sore lip) and child of whistling water; he is a direct descendant of Chief Bell Rock. Dione was a member of the St. Charles parish of Pryor. Dione attended St. Charles mission School, in Pryor for his grade school years and graduated from Plenty Coups High School as the salutatorian for the class of 1990. Dione was on the team that won the state basketball title in 1987. Dione was a voracious reader and books and music were his passion and favorite pastime. He always told his friends, “You can always find me at Barnes and Noble.” Though small in stature, Dione never backed down from any challenge. He was a jockey in his earlier years and is the only known jockey to win the “Crow Derby” back to back in 1987 and 1988 with the thoroughbreds Speedy Magoo and Black Radar. Gwen Plain Bull bought him the right to speak in public while he was in Junior High and his grandfather, the late Henry Rides the Horse, Sr. also gave him his public speaking right. Dione was an intellectual, a “Walking Dictionary & Encyclopedia”, and his passion and knowledge of music was unparalleled. Dione graduated from Little Big Horn College in 2008 and made it on the Dean's List, recently employed at the Arrow Creek Ranch for the Crow tribe. Though a humble man, he had an engaging personality, loved to visit, and quickly became a friend to whomever he met. He had a great sense of humor, loved his kids and had a kind hearted spirit. He was on various handgame championship teams for Arrow Creek and he loved to sing not only at hand games, but he also enjoyed karaoking. As devout Catholic, he said the rosary on a daily basis, was a participant of the Crow sun dance,and also very proud of his Crow heritage. He was a devoted Plenty Coups basketball fan; and he really looked forward to this year's team taking the state title. He is preceded in death by his parents Velma “Cookie” Bell Rock and James K. Paternal aunts/grandmothers: Annie, Alice & Edith Bell Rock. Sister: Tana (Jason) Shane. Dione is survived by his children, Tarynn, Dione “DJ” Jr., Tyrese, Tamryn and Nicholas Bell Rock. Grandchildren: Taisha Old Elk and T'ian Torres. Siblings- James “JK” Jr, Rita (Eric) Turns Plenty. God-children: Victoria Bellrock, Raven Good Luck, Darrian Four Bear. Dione struggled with alcohol addiction in his later years but turned to prayer and reading the bible to defeat this powerful opponent in his life. He had great potential in whatever career he chose and wanted to be that person to succeed and be with his children who were the love of his life. GOD took him too soon because he needed him more than we did. He is loved by so many and will be missed dearly. He had many nicknames and to name a few: Gizmo, Mr. Magoo, Mr. Peabody, Lonnie Bell and Taylor Brown. Vigil Service 7:00 p.m. Thursday with the Funeral Service 11:00 a.m. Friday, both at St. Charles Mission in Pryor with interment in Whiteman Cemetery.
