Obituary
Our husband, father and grandfather, Francis Powers, 81, died peacefully with his family by his side at Riverstone Horizon Hospice Home on Monday afternoon, March 22, 2010.Francis was born September 20, 1928 in Red Lodge, MT the son of Francis, Sr. and Ruth (McGonegal) Powers. The family lived on a ranch near Red Lodge where he was raised until the age of twelve, at which time they moved to Billings. He attended Draper Grade School, which was a one room school. In Billings he attended Lincoln Jr. High and graduated from Senior High School in 1946. In July he enlisted in the Marine Corps and was honorably discharged in 1948 at which time he enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve. In September of 1950, Francis served active duty in Korea until November of 1951, (King Battery, 11th Marines, 1st Marine Division).Upon his return, Francis continued his education at the University of Montana, graduating in 1953 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and attended 2 years of law school.On June 16, 1953, Francis was united in marriage to Marie Jeanette Kehne in Kellogg, ID. They lived in Missoula then moved to Billings in 1954 and Francis was employed by Dun & Bradstreet for 36 years as a Senior Business Analyst, retiring in 1990.Francis was an active member of Holy Rosary Parish and served on the parish council and in hospital ministry. He was a member of the Marine Corps League, Eugene Sara Detachment, and served on the Billings Traffic Control Board from 1980 to 1982. He served on the Billings Health Affiliated Credit Union for 6 years and was a professed member of the Secular Franciscan Order, Queen of Angels Fraternity. Painting, writing, fishing, gardening, genealogy were some of his hobbies, he was a history buff and an avid reader.Francis leaves behind his wife, Jeanette; children: Michael (Margery) Powers of Minneapolis, MN, Jeffrey (Melinda) Powers of Blackfoot, ID, Anne (Ardie) Halvorson of Billings, Robert Powers of Greeley, CO, Ruth (John) Piccone of East Helena, MT; grandchildren: Caitlin, John, Katherine, Elizabeth, Anne Marie (Andy), Daniel, Sean, Erik, Jessica; great-grandchildren: Therese, Gabrielle, James; sister, Patricia Bean; nephews: John, David, Thomas. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Michael, brother-in-law, Vernald Bean, sister-in-law Margaret Kehne.Visitation for Francis will be Friday, from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Monday, 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Dahl Funeral Chapel. Vigil services will be 7:00 p.m. Monday, March 29, 2010 with Funeral Mass 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 30, both at Holy Rosary Parish. Francis will be committed to rest in St. Pius Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be made to: Holy Rosary Fund or Queen of Angels SFO Fraternity, 1132 Delphinium, Billings, MT 19102 or to the charity of one's choice. Dr. Robert Powers and Family, My heart aches for all of you in your loss. I can only imagine that Francis was an amazing man by the son he raised that I have only known for a short time. May you find comfort in beautiful memories and peace that only God can bring.

Jeannette & family: I am saddened to hear of Fran's passing. I am sorry for your loss. Fran was a wonderful co-worker and I always enjoyed his many stories and humorous insights. We had good times at work and we shared many laughs. He loved to tell military stories as well as sharing family memories. Like the time he forgot and left one of the kids at the grocery store! Ah, good times! The world has lost a true gentle man and I will remember the positive impact that he made on my life.
