Leo Gaertner, Sr.

Leo E. Gaertner, aged 74, passed away May 31st, 2025, in Billings, Montana. Leo, nicknamed “Lee,” was born January 5th, 1951 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Adeline (Buechele) and Leo Casper Gaertner Jr.

Leo married Jan Rehr Gaertner February of 1988 in Great Falls, Montana. Jan and Leo spent most of their married life in Cooke City, Montana, with all their boys, living there at different times of their lives.  Living in the mountains was a very special time. 

Leo lived in many places while working in the hotel and hospitality industry and completed an apprenticeship with Weston Hotel Corporation. Leo worked his way up from Food and Beverage Manager to General Manager in hotels. He later owned a restaurant in Cooke City for many years.

Leo loved to golf, grow tomatoes, and loved going to Steeler Football games with his sons and grandsons.

Leo was preceded in death by his grandson Leo (Bump).

Leo is survived by his wife Jan, his sons Leo Jr., Buddy, Andrew and Steven, and nine grandchildren.  Also, by his half-brothers Greg and Jeff Gaertner.

Leo lived life on his terms and was always looking forward to the next Steeler’s game!

Leo will be sadly missed by his sons and wife.

A Celebration of Life will be held August 9th,  from 2-6 p.m. at St. John's Lillis Chapel, 2429 Mission Way, Billings, Montana.
