Obituary
Dolores Alvin Hurr, 91, of Billings, MT was born in Forsyth Montana on January 11, 1934, to her loving parents Carl and Mary Alvin. She graduated high school in Forsyth and met the love of her life William “Bill” Hurr, and they were married for 74 years.
Her life and work were four different segments that were all characterized by her acute attention to detail. She worked her first job with aerospace company, where she was a secretary in the industrial art engineering section and that was her first job that shaped her ability to be particular and detail oriented.
After Bill’s military service was completed, they came back to Billings right at the time of the big oil boom, and Dolores took a job as a geological secretary, and her duties again were heavy with attention to details, something that she was extremely good at. She accepted calls from geologists from the oil wells with the drilling report that she would type up and send off to home office.
Then they left Billings and went to Cody Wyoming where she was employed with the school district and around that time, the world was starting to be more computerized, and she took to it with ease. It was Dolores’s responsibility to schedule the junior high and high school student class schedule every year and put together teaching assignments and refused to accept a schedule if each kid did not get the classes they wanted.
After she retired from the school district, on a trip to the Ozarks on an outing, they came upon rows of quilts hanging on lines in front of stores and she instantly wanted to stop in and look at the quilts. She fell in love with quilting at that moment, she saw them and loved the detail and intricacies and the beauty in each quilt. From that moment, she was inspired to become a quilter and color artist and became so talented that she won numerous bests of shows and won judges decisions in many competitions. She quilted up until her last few years.
Her attention to detail helped her become a top quilter, and in her decision making. When Delores wanted to know something, her mindset was always “tell me the whole story”. She always wanted to be completely informed and know the bigger picture before she made any decisions.
Something that Bill and Dolores loved to do together is whale watching. Dolores loved to see the whales. They went to Hawaii eight times to sail out and catch a glimpse of whales and orcas.
Dolores was a beautiful soul and will be dearly missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her.
