Obituary
Charles Fred “Charlie” Hinch, 84, passed away peacefully on March 2, 2026, in Billings, Montana, surrounded by his loving family, either present or in spirit. Born on December 17, 1941, in Liberal, Kansas, Charlie lived a life defined by love, dedication, hard work, and service to both his family and his community.
Charlie grew up in Elkhart, Kansas, where he graduated from high school before pursuing higher education at West Texas State University in Canyon, Texas. There, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Animal Husbandry and Agriculture.
An entrepreneur at heart, Charlie, alongside his beloved wife Marsha, owned and operated The Foothills Men’s and Boy’s Wear and The Foothills Outdoors in Choteau, Montana — retail stores specializing in menswear and outdoor gear that became staples of the community.
In 1989, Charlie’s passion for agriculture led him back to Elkhart, Kansas, where for nine years he split his time between Kansas and Montana, farming the family ground. In 1998, he retired from farming and returned full-time to Choteau and to the life he and Marsha had built together.
Charlie loved Choteau deeply, and his commitment to his community was unwavering. He was a member of the Choteau Lions Club, the Choteau Chamber of Commerce, and the Teton County Investment Club, as well as a past member of the Shriners and the Masonic Lodge. His forward-thinking nature, generous spirit, and steady leadership left a lasting impact on those around him.
Above all else, Charlie cherished his family. He and Marsha were high school sweethearts who married in 1961 and built a beautiful life over 64 years of marriage. Together they raised three children: Kara Jeanne Hinch (who preceded him in death in 1979), Kim (Rachael) Hinch, and Jason (Kellie) Hinch.
Charlie was a proud grandfather to Kylie Yurga (Joe), Cassidy Hirsch, Grace Hirsch, Kaitlyn Meyerink (Monte), and Jaxon Hinch (Winnie); and a delighted great-grandfather to Aviv Ahron, Maddox Yurga, Ivy Meyerink, Wren Meyerink, and Baby Hinch, expected soon.
He is also survived by his brother, George (Anne); nieces Monique and Sonja; and nephew Gaylen (Candace) Hinch.
Known for his kindness and generosity, Charlie had a quick wit and an infectious sense of humor that brought joy to everyone he met. He will be remembered for the sparkle in his eyes, his captivating stories, his warm smile, and his unforgettable laugh. Charlie extended hospitality and friendship freely, making everyone feel welcome.
As a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, his legacy is one of love, laughter, steadiness, and acceptance.
There is no memorial service planned at this time. Memorial donations may be sent to Bright Eyes Animal Shelter (175 State Hwy 221, Choteau, MT 59422) or the Choteau Volunteer Fire Department (920 8th Ave. NW, Choteau, MT 59422).
Charlie’s passing leaves an indelible space in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. May his kindness and optimism continue to guide those he leaves behind. May his memory bring comfort to all who were fortunate enough to share in his remarkable life.
You are irreplaceable, Charlie Fred.
