Obituary
In Loving Memory of David Franklin Mawyer
David Franklin Mawyer was born on June 3, 1953, in Quantico, Virginia, to Gloria Mawyer and Walter Franklin Mawyer “Frank” while his father was serving in the United States Marine Corps.
As a child, David’s family lived throughout Tennessee, spent time in Atlanta, and eventually settled in Memphis. He attended Christian Brothers High School, where he excelled academically while distinguishing himself in football and track. His athletic ability earned him a football scholarship to the University of Memphis.
David met his forever wife Robbie on a blind date, one that opened their eyes to a remarkable love story that would span 57 wonderful years.
Gifted both academically and professionally, David was accepted into dental school before completing his bachelor’s degree. After earning his dental degree, he made a life-changing decision. Rather than accept a partnership in a successful Memphis practice, he and Robbie followed a dream west to Montana and a promised life filled with outdoor adventure, which he pursued with “reckless abandon.” Whether hiking, climbing, kayaking, motorcycling, or fly fishing, David embraced every opportunity to experience the beauty of God’s creation.
The young couple spent seven years in Hardin, Montana, where David established his dental practice while Robbie taught at the junior high and high school. More importantly, they built lifelong friendships that have endured to this day.
Eventually, they moved to Billings where David joined the esteemed dentists of Plaza West before opening his own private practice. His dental team became family, and his patients became lifelong friends. Known for his gentle touch, David was a gifted, virtually pain-free dentist who genuinely cared for every person who sat in his chair. His clinical skills were exceptional, leading to an invitation to join PAC-live, a cosmetic full-mouth reconstruction program. For many years, he spent a month each year traveling to mentor and teach fellow dentists.
At age 61, David’s life changed dramatically when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. The illness cruelly brought an early end to the career he had hoped to continue for another decade. Leaving behind his beloved “dream team” and faithful patients was one of life’s greatest disappointments, but he faced that challenge with courage and dignity.
On July 10, 2026, David passed away due to complications from Parkinson’s.
Above all else, David’s greatest joy was his family. He and Robbie were blessed with three incredible sons: Bryant, Gibby, and Forrest. Becoming parents later in life gave them an even deeper appreciation for every moment together. They encouraged their boys in every pursuit, teaching them the values of love, hard work, integrity, faith, and a passion for living life to the fullest. Together they shared unforgettable adventures, from family trips throughout Europe to treasured days at their cabin in the Wyoming wilderness.
When their three granddaughters were born, David discovered yet another chapter of joy. Being “Poppa” brought him immeasurable happiness, and he cherished every opportunity to be an active and loving presence in their lives.
How do you say goodbye to an amazing husband, father, Poppa, brother, uncle, colleague, and friend?
We take comfort in knowing that his spirit is finally free from the pain and limitations of this earthly life. Though our hearts are broken, we are forever grateful for the extraordinary man we were blessed to love.
David’s greatest legacy lives on in the family he treasured so deeply. He is survived by his beloved wife, Robbie.
He is also survived by his three sons: Bryant Franklin Mawyer and his loving wife, Lexie, and their beautiful daughters, Elise, Ezrie, and Aysa; David Gibson "Gibby" Mawyer; and Forrest Bienvenu Mawyer and his loving Olivia.
He is also survived by his sisters: Debbie Haskell and her husband, Dan, along with their children, Erin, Matt, and Jane; and Janey Gordon and her husband, Mike.
David deeply cherished his faith and his time at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church. He will receive a private Orthodox burial surrounded by family and his church community.
A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date so that all whose lives David touched may gather to honor and remember him.
