Obituary
On Saturday July 11, 2026, Heaven welcomed an angel. Following a courageous display of strength and resilience and surrounded by her loving family, Kathleen(O’Neill) Toney was called Home.
Born into a family of five children on February 18, 1945, in Charleston, South Carolina, Kathy’s life was defined by her devotion to the values of faith, family, friendship and service to others.
While attending Johnston Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Abingdon, Virginia, she met and later married Dan Toney in Bristol, Virginia, the beginnings of an unparalleled love story that would span 56 years.
During their time in Virginia, they would welcome their four children and eventually find a home in Billings, Montana.
A highly respected member of the nursing community for over 50 years, Kathy touched the lives of many and became a champion for enhanced healthcare for women. Beginning as an RN in the Emergency and Operating Rooms, she would continue to make her greatest impact as an administrator, going on to receive her Master’s Degree in Nursing Administration. As Director of Women’s Services at St. Vincent Hospital, she was instrumental in the establishment of Elizabeth Seton Prenatal Clinic for limited-income women and the expansion of the hospital’s Women’s Center, facilitating improved care options for women through all stages of life. After serving for 10 years as Director of the Yellowstone Naturopathic Clinic, she retired from nursing to devote her time to her proudest role as Nana.
A devoted wife and mother, her home was always a welcoming place for family and friends alike. If ever in doubt, one could always find Kathy and Dan in the bleachers and on the sidelines supporting their children and grandchildren in all their endeavors. When life slowed down enough, she delighted in being with her animals and taking the opportunity to explore the East and West coasts alongside Dan, developing a special affinity for the Oregon coast.
Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, James Robert and Mary Lannon O’Neill, her sisters, Mary Anne and Patty, and her brother, James Robert. She is survived by her husband, Dan Toney; her children, Ben & Jody Toney of Helena, MT; Becky & Rich Brown of Billings, MT; Bryan & Nicole Toney of Billings, MT; Bob & Aurora Toney of Bozeman, MT; her brother, Terry O’Neill of Shepherd, MT; and 8 grandchildren, Chloe, Peyton, Ella, Ethan, Noah, Poppy, Cece, and Daniel.
A celebration of life is being held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 8 Dahl’s Funeral Chapel in Billings, Montana. To honor Kathy’s devotion to improving the lives of women and children, the family welcomes contributions in lieu of flowers to Shodair Children’s Hospital Genetics Clinic in her memory. Gifts can be given online at https://shodair.org/donate/.
