Richard O. “Dick” Fossen

Richard O. “Dick” Fossen, 80, of Billings, Montana, passed away peacefully on September 24, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on September 28, 1945, in Heimdal, North Dakota, to Lloyd S. Fossen and Esther Rose Billigmeier Fossen.

Dick grew up in North Dakota and lived in Heimdal, Fessenden, and Fargo before making his home in Billings, Montana. He attended classes at the North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton, North Dakota.

In 1966, Dick enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served his country in Vietnam. Following his military service, he worked at Sherwin-Williams and later as a painting contractor.

Dick was a man who enjoyed being involved in his community. He was a member of the Sons of Norway and the American Legion, enjoyed working concessions at the fair, and loved playing on the church softball team.  He also enjoyed being part of a bowling league.

On September 24, 1994, Dick married Mary Brown in Fargo, North Dakota. Together, they built a life filled with family, friendship, laughter, and many simple joys.

Dick found happiness in the little things. He loved watching football, playing Yahtzee and Tri-Ominos, bowling, doing Sudoku, and reading the newspaper. He especially enjoyed his daily Sudoku and, perhaps most of all, finding a good coupon. But nothing brought him greater pride and joy than his family. He was so very proud of his children and grandchildren and treasured every moment spent with them.

Dick is survived by his wife, Mary; daughters Katie Fossen and stepdaughter Laura; sons Chad Fossen and Craig Fossen; sister Sylvia; brother Lyle; and his six grandchildren, Connor, Blake, Hanna, Nicholas, Brody, and Riley.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd S. Fossen and Esther Rose Billigmeier Fossen; brother Gary; and sisters Ruth and Janice.

Dick will be remembered for his devotion to his family and his faith, his service to his country, his community spirit, his sense of humor, and his appreciation for life's simple pleasures. His family will forever cherish the memories of his love, laughter, stories, and the many ways he showed how proud he was of those he loved.
