Margaret Crawford

Margaret Grenstiner Crawford passed away in Billings, at Aspen Meadows on September 11, 2015 eleven days before her 91st birthday. She was born September 22, 1924 to Anton and Helen (Vetsch) Grenstiner. She was the second oldest of eight children. Margaret grew up on a farm in South Dakota. She married Roy Crawford on October 30, 1945 and together they farmed, worked in the oil fields and later became business owners of the Club Bar in Dillon, MT. They divorced in August 1977. When Margaret moved to Billings after the divorce, she worked at the Powder Horn and the War Bonnet Lounge. Her engaging smile, laughter and sense of humor were assets while working with the public. She loved being around the customers. Margaret was a member at Holy Rosary, St. Pius X and St. Patrick Co-Cathedral and to the Catholic Daughters. Our mom was struck with rheumatoid arthritis when she was only in her twenties. Margaret was finally diagnosed at 35. Doctors told her to rest, she figured out it was better to move. Her energy level was always high and as she put it “I had 5 kids, I couldn't rest.” Margaret challenged herself and was determined not to become an invalid. When she could no longer walk outdoors, she walked the long hallways at South Forty. The residents teased her about wearing out the carpets. Anyone she met with R.A. she told them “you must move even sitting in a chair, move your arms and hands, wiggle your legs and feet even when it hurts.” Margaret's positive attitude and strong will kept her moving until 90. Mom was also a wonderful cook and baker. She loved cook books and new recipes. Mom was well known for her delicious home-made bread and rolls. She said working the dough warmed her hands and loosened up the stiffness. The bonus was fluffy light buns for sandwiches. She made salads and desserts for church suppers and pot-lucks at South Forty. Many residents and staff were recipients of her baked goods. Margaret always had cookies, cakes or muffins in her freezer to share. Our mom was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers Roy and Art; two sisters Janet and Renie; and her oldest son Jim. She is survived by two daughters Lori (Bill) Albertson and Jannie Coyne; twin sons Leroy (Carol) and Royal (Vicky). She had 8 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Margaret was proud of the five generations. Her family would like to thank the staff at Aspen Meadows for the kind and compassionate care they provided for our mother. Our deepest gratitude to each and every one of you. Cremation has taken place. Vigil 7:00pm, Thursday on October 15, 2015 at Dahl Funeral Chapel. Memorial Mass will be noon, Friday on October 16, 2015 at St. Patrick Co-Cathedral with a luncheon to follow. Inurnment at Holy Cross Cemetery.
