Obituary
Dorcas M. Halverson was a 70 yr. resident of Hardin, a native of Wichita, KS, daughter of Harry Craig and Jo(eseph) (Blankenship) Ellis, sister of Lucille (Ellis) Gordon. She married Gordon E. Halverson in 1946 (died 5/17/1995). She moved to Hardin to own and operate the Big Horn Motel and Campground and teach in the Hardin and Crow Agency schools. Dorcas was a graduate of Eastern Montana College. She was a member of First Congregational Church, Hardin; a MT-WYO UCC Conference delegate; National Audubon Society; El Porvenir Nicaragua supporter; Big Horn County Historical Society; Hardin Friends of the Library; Am. Found. for Suicide Prevention, MT Chapter; and various quilt circles. She is survived by: Eric Halverson (Catherine Card), Billings, MT; Lark Ross (Dennis), Enumclaw, WA; Sally Schnadelbach (Larry), Mandeville, LA; and Kris Halverson (Catherine Handler), Arlington, TX; three grandchildren: Vanessa Ross (Shams) Mir, Leawood, KS; Matthew (Ashley) Ross, Cody, WY; and Beret Halverson (Paul Kramer), Montpelier, VT; great-grandchild: Stieg Ross Mir. No services are planned. After cremation, burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery at Fort Abraham Lincoln, Mandan, ND. Memorials can be sent to: Big Horn County Historical Museum, Hardin, MT, National Audubon Society, El Porvenir Nicaragua or a charity of your choice.

I, too, remember Dorcas with deep fondness. She had energy, enthusiasm and an encouraging word for everyone she met. She was game for new activities and adventures and seemed to take setbacks in stride. I would say she was not just progressive "for her time", but for this time as well. What a gift to have known her, even for a short time. My heartfelt sympathies to all her family.

I loved her so much, she was the best great auntie I ever had! She was so loving, kind, thoughtful, witty, funny and unique. Until we see each other again, I'll be thinking of you, Lindsey

John and I were like family to Dorcas, and to Gordon, when he was alive...We spent many a Christmas Eve at her house, where she served Oyster Stew, or Chili. Many an evening we would play games, usually involving winning pennies from each other. Leo and Lillian Colstad were usually with us there, too. We remember going on road trips, once to Gillette to see Greg Louganis dive, to Missoula to see our son Sean, or to auctions in far away rural places with dirt roads...Dorcas was always the person to keep us all entertained with her comments about what was growing in the fields we passed. She and I went to Europe together, once to Italy, and another time to England, and then to the Netherlands, where she was blessedly quiet when we couldn't find the car rental drop off point, and into the rest of Europe, almost losing her in Prague! She and I took a road trip to Nebraska also., and a bird watching trip to Yellowstone Park . She was up for anything!!! We looked forward to her carrot cake, spinach salad (she insisted we were never to share the recipe!), cowboy beans, and her many food "inventions" that she came up with, freely making substitutions for ingredients she didn't have on hand. Dorcas got me started with quilting, and did binding for many of my quilts, as she loved the hand work. She shared all the book plots of books she was reading, and always had a plan of something to do, even in her last year. We will really miss Dorcas, and her upbeat attitudes about life, even when it was difficult for her. P.S. I will always remember Dorcas piercing my ears in the teachers' lounge at Crow Agency School! Using a darning needle, and a bar of soap, she was fearless! It was a perfect job! Good bye, dear friend!
