Peter Helfrich

Peter “Pete” Helfrich, 92, of Billings passed away May 3, 2010. He was born July 14, 1917 at a farm community south of Glen Ullin, ND. He was raised on the family farm and received his education in the Glen Ullin area. He entered the US Army Air Corps on May 28, 1941. While in the service, on November 11, 1945 he married Maryalys Geist at Long Beach, California. He was honorably discharged November 27, 1945. Pete started his banking career in Long Beach, California. His wife Maryalys also worked at a bank in Long Beach. After several years they moved to Billings, Montana where Pete continued his career in banking with Security Trust & Savings Bank (now 1st Interstate Bank). He was with the bank for 26 years. After retirement, he entered the house building and property management business. He fully retired in 1991. Pete and Maryalys enjoyed extensive travel during their retirement years. Pete enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, stained glass and especially woodworking, which he considered a form of therapy.He is preceded in death by his wife, Maryalys, who passed away October 31, 1994, his son Larry, his father John and mother Katherine Helfrich, his brothers James and Leo. Pete is survived by his daughter Cheryl (Guy) Vernon of Albuquerque, NM; his daughter-in-law Denise Helfrich Dow of Sheridan, WY (Larrys widow); four brothers, George (Irene) Helfrich, Tom Helfrich, Louis (Wilma) Helfrich, John (Diane) Helfrich; a sister Alice (Mike) Kobilansky; sister-in-law Ginny Helfrich (widow of James Helfrich)Memorial services will be held 3:00 p.m. Friday at St. Johns Vista Chapel, 3940 Rimrock Road, Billings, MT 59102.
