Obituary
Kerri Michele Johnsrud Kanning danced her way into heaven on the morning of Thursday, December 17, 2015. She was surrounded by love and was ushered with open arms by her family into her eternal home. Kerri had victoriously battled and defeated breast cancer in 2005. In March 2015, Kerri was re-diagnosed with Stage 4 metastastic breast cancer. Kerri persevered amidst disappointment, trials, joys and fears and fought the good fight while faithfully walking with her Lord Jesus every step of the way. Kerri was a seeker of light, she was a teacher, an encourager, and a lover. The community of people she touched is immeasurable, her legacy is vast. She is survived by her mother Marlene, sister Johanna, husband Jeff and four children Ethan, Jordyn, Thor and Chloe' and their spouses. Her greatest joy in life was her family, she fondly named her four grandbabies her “A team” and found strength, joy and peace in them. Kerri was adored by all of her students and teachers she taught with at Trinity Lutheran School. Kerri will be missed every minute of the day but her family has a peace amidst the pain in knowing their sweet mom, wife and daughter is free, victorious and whole with her Lord Jesus Christ. The memorial service for Kerri will be held Monday, December 21, 2015 at 2:00pm at Faith Evangelical Church. All who attend are asked to wear bright happy colors representative of Kerri's passion and joy; this event is absolutely a celebration of her life and love.

Ms Kerri was my daughter's, 4 year old teacher at Mom's Day Out Preschool. She was such a loving and caring teacher. My daughter was very "energetic" and "independent". I must admit that we had to have a few conferences with her. Ms. Kerri was always very positive and patient. One day my daughter came home and said that she learn that I had to listen to her because Ms. Kerri said so. Well this time I had to call a conference with her. I told her what Jessica said and she started laughing. They had been talking about actually paying attention and listening (or "hearing" ) to what people said. Of course my daughter, with her selective hearing didn't hear the entire statement Ms Kerri had said "You need to listen to your parents and they have to listen to you." All Jessica heard was that she could tell me what to do. No matter how many times Ms. Kerri tried to explain what she meant, Jessica always had it in the back of her mind that she could tell me what to do. I was lucky because my daughter was in track at Senior High with Chloe so I could always see Kerri at the meets. She was an amazing woman! She will be deeply missed.

I am so thankful for her most recent tiny affirmation to me. Yesterday after a lengthy conversation with Lorrie, our mutual friend, about her going to be with Jesus, my cell phone's battery was low. When I charge it, I change it to airplane mode. I swiped up on my iPhone and accidentally my music button was touched too. The song was Casting Crowns' "Praise You with the Dance." I stood there in awe! I exclaimed, "Thank you, dear friend, for speaking to me in song 🎶...love you, Kerri. I look forward to that great reunion some day." Love because of Him,

Kerri Kanning was the real deal. She was a Christian women of unshakable faith in the Lord, a loving mother and wife devoted to her family and a women who made a difference in the world in her service to church and community. Cliché, I know, but Kerri was one of those people full of light and optimism that made the world just a little bit better place, a place filled with hope and joy. We met Kerri in 2004 when our daughter Amy was a kindergartener at Trinity Lutheran School. She was gracefully fighting cancer then and was an inspiration to us, as she always gave glory to God! And, wow, did she know scripture!!! During Amy's first grade year, after Kerri's treatments had been completed and she was well on the road to recovery, we got to know her more intimately. Amy would spend time with Mrs. Kanning as she worked with her to improve her reading and math skills. They formed a special bond, as Mrs. Kanning encouraged and loved Amy. They even went to lunch together on occasion. When our second daughter was born that fall, I had some complications with my delivery and almost did not survive. Amy had witnessed some scary scenes at the hospital and ended up going to school feeling scared and uncertain. That day Mrs. Kanning took her to her classroom and prayed with her. I recall her saying that on that day, Amy's faith became her own. Mrs. Kanning was our saving grace, not only that day, but on many others! I remember her sweet message to me on the phone that day and the beautiful prayer she said for me! She will be fondly remembered and so missed until we see her again! What a bright soul who touched every heart in every way!! She will be so missed but I know she is dancing in heaven and spreading that infectious smile. It makes me want to fight harder to end this disease!!!!! My thoughts and prayers are with Kerri's entire family and friends!! Carol Scovill
