Dale Kills Pretty Enemy

Dale Norman Kills Pretty Enemy, at the age of 61, passed away to the other side camp on Sunday, September 21, 2014 at 5:47 a.m, after fighting an ongoing illnesses. Dale was given the Indian Name ‘Pie San Hunka Sni' - ‘Lame Pale Buffalo' which was given to him by his Grandparents, Felix & Alice Kills Pretty Enemy. Dale was born on April 5, 1953 in Ft.Yates, North Dakota to Ella Mae (Flying Horse) and Gilbert Kills Pretty Enemy, Sr. He grew up on the Standing Rock Sioux reservation, in the Rock Creek area, also known as Bull Head, South Dakota. Upon moving to Montana in the early 1970's, Dale was adopted by the late Robert Round Face and became a member of the Greasy Mouth Clan and was a Child of the Greasy Mouth Clan. Dale came from a long line of Medicine men and was the 3rd generation of the Holy man Leon Kills Pretty Enemy [Hosi ka hipi (Message Bringer)]. He practiced his Native American religion and was also a member of the St. Charles Catholic church of Pryor, Montana. As a child Dale was small for his age, his grandfather Felix (who was legally blind) sized up Dale up through touch, and predicted that he would be a very big and strong man. Although he was not taken seriously, Felix's prophecy soon became true. At a young age Dale's father Gilbert instilled in him the art of fighting and self defense, by utilizing the rules of boxing. He had a natural ability and through his fathers intuitive guidance he was taught how to defend himself at a very young age. Dale was an excellent fighter, whether in the ring or on the street. He was known to always look out for the “little guy”. Like his father, Dale was a natural teacher and in turn taught his siblings and children how to defend themselves. Dale was known by his younger siblings as a fearless protector who let it be known that his siblings and those close to him were under his protection which carried on to his children, grandchildren and close friends. As a child Dale started and attended school at the Bull Head Day School from K-4th grade. Dale then attended St. Joseph Indian School located in Chamberlain, South Dakota from 5th - 8th grade and from the years 1969-1973, Dale attended and graduated from St. Pauls High School located in Marty South Dakota. After graduating from high school, Dale attended Haskell Indian Jr. College (now a four year college) and obtained an associates degree in engineering drafting. Dale was a natural athlete and participated in track, baseball, boxing, softball, wrestling, basketball, and football as a line backer, and was a natural all around athlete. He was offered a football scholarship for the University of Nebraska (Corn Huskers) but declined and played for the Haskell Indians for a short time but lost interest in football after losing two of his best friends in a tragic car accident. While at Haskel he met the love of his life and soul mate, Jolene (Whiteman) Kills Pretty Enemy. Dale and Jolene were united in marriage in September 1974 - this month was their wedding anniversary, which spanned 40 wonderful years. From this marriage they were blessed with Casey, Jason, Joelle, Trisheena, and Chase. He was always involved in his children's athletic endeavors by teaching them the techniques and skills required for whatever sport they participated in. He was a boxing coach when his son Jason boxed for the Billings Amateur Boxing Club along with the late Melvin Weasel Boy Sr. and Jose Chavez. The boxing team made it to Kings Port, Tennessee, and Prescott, Arizona in 1989 and 1990 for the Silver Gloves Boxing Championship. Dale and the other two boxing coaches took the boys in the boxing team as their own and mentored them in their life goals, problems and encouraged them to excel. To this day, the men from the boxing team always asked about Dale and greeted him warmly whenever they saw him. Dale was a gentle and quiet man although his size belied this side of him. He was always a gentlemen and was gracious to whomever he met. He was a man's man and had many friends. He was also very spiritual. He welcomed many people into his home and took his nieces and nephews as his own. His wife's family and extended family took him in as their own and many of them loved him for his gentle manner and for his sense of humor. Not only was he fluent in the Lakota language, he understood the Crow language as well and most people never knew he wasn't Crow because he answered them in English. He was very intelligent and was artistic in nature. He was mechanically inclined and one of his favorite relaxing times was to fix cars. He advised his children whenever they had problems and nothing was too big or small when it concerned them or his grandchildren. Dale's favorite times was when his whole family was there for holiday celebrations and he always had a big smile and basked in their presence. His immediate family, in-laws and his family from South Dakota were all very important to him in his life. Dale was preceded in death by his parents, Ella Mae and Gilbert Kills Pretty Enemy, Sr., brother Timothy Kills Pretty Enemy, and sisters Edna and Rosalind Kills Pretty Enemy, sister-in-law Velma Bell Rock whom he considered as his best friend. Dale's children, family, and his wife and best friend of 40 years are grateful for sharing in Dale's life. Dale is survived by his his wife, Jolene, and his children Casey (Eric Birdinground), Jason (Sereatha Two Leggins), Joelle, Trisheena (Sport Other Medicine), Chase Kills Pretty Enemy, Darrian Four Bear and Camila Chavez. his grandchildren, Jerika, Erica, Eric Jr., Zeeka and Mary Birdinground; Enson, Jaycee, Kason and Lemuel Kills Pretty Enemy; Jemerson and Jerimiah Pretty Paint; Nash Kills Pretty Enemy and Arian Other Medicine; and Shanell. His siblings: Michael (Adella) Kills Pretty Enemy (Bullhead, SD); Gilbert Kills Pretty Enemy, Jr. (McLaughlin, SD); Mary Helen Kills Pretty Enemy (Bullhead, SD); Kris (Theresa) Kills Pretty Enemy, Indianhead, MD; and Clarice Kills Pretty Enemy (Rapid City, SD). The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. David Mark and Marie Yarlott for their kindness and care provided during his long illness. We thank you for your unconditional love dad, and although our hearts are broken and we feel like our world is shattered, we know that you suffer no more. We love you more than words can express and thank you for being our hero, our Superman! Rosary will be held in Pryor, at 7:00pm Wednesday at St. Charles Mission.
