Richard Meurer

Richard's bodily presence in this world ended on November 12, 2012 but his spirit remains. He slipped away quietly at home, comforted and supported by his loving family. How blest we were to have such a loving Father in our lives. Richard was devoted to his family and friends and in return was loved by all who knew him. As his nephew, Michael Meurer, observed 'He was a natural aristocrat his entire life, and his wife was his calming center'. Richard was an intrepid entertainer, a very warm, social person who cared so much for people. Twenty-one years ago, he reluctantly entered St. Vincent's Cardiac Rehab; little did he know the wonderful impact it would have on his life. The friendships formed became his second family and St.V's cardio-rehab his home away from home. He started his days with a song and a story and liked nothing better than to make someone laugh. Richard was born September 9, 1923 in Sioux Falls, SD. At the age of fourteen, to supplement the family income, he worked at Wilson's Super Service as a gas station attendant. He joined the Merchant Marines to serve his country in WWII. He embraced his time at sea and it was then he developed a love for travel. After mustering out, he returned to S.D. to be closer to family, and pursue his passion for the outdoors. Richard worked as a 'cabbie' and then a truck driver. It was in Sioux Falls that he met and fell in love with Anne Katheryn Mathey. They were introduced by Richard's sister Marie, and were married on July 21, 1947 in Roby, South Dakota. Richard and Anne moved to Billings, Montana in 1951. They were blest with five beautiful children. He is survived by his loving children; Timothy Meurer, Terry Anne Carver, Patrick Meurer, Thomas (Tina) Meurer, and Jamie (Jeff) Dyk. Also thirteen grandchildren; Thomas (Kristin) Carver, Andrew Carver, Katheryn (Dustin) Meurer Lachenmaier, Angela Meurer, Tyler Dyk, Stephanie Meurer, Jennah Meurer, Tiffany Dyk, Tanner Dyk, Nichole (Mark) Beddes, Javan (Layne) Chapple, Brian and Michael Ashworth, and four great-grandchildren, Arin Ann Carver, Andre Richard Chapple, Avery Beddes and Griffin Timothy Lachenmaier. Richard's surviving brothers are Robert (Doris) Meurer, James Meurer; his surviving sisters are Marie Nixon, Patty (Gary) Elofson, and Verone Reynolds. His brother-in-law Pete Mathey and sisters-in-law Leona Mathey and Peggy Meurer; many nieces, nephews and extended family, also survive him. His wife Anne, the love of his life, his parents Rudolph and Rosalia Meurer, three brothers Dale, Ramon and Baby Boy Meurer, and his sister Rosalia Galantine preceded him in death. All who knew and loved him will remember Richard's kind and gentle spirit. Richard's family would like to thank the staff and friends from Advanced Care Hospital, St. Vincent's Cardio-Rehab, Rocky Mountain Hospice and the medical community who also touched his life. “Here's looking at you, Chief” Service: Vigil Service will be 6:30 p.m. Friday at Dahl Funeral Chapel. Memorial Mass will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Holy Rosary Church.
