Obituary
Raymond B. Mus, 86, of Laurel, passed away March 30, 2014 at the Billings Clinic. He was born April 4, 1927 in Red Lodge, Montana, the son of Earl and Ilmi “Mary” (Hendrickson) Mus. He joined the Merchant Marines and was stationed in the far east, including Korea, Vietnam and the Philippines during World War II. He was very proud of his years in the service. Raymond moved to Cle Elum, Washington, where he graduated from high school. He returned to Montana and worked in the Butte mines and then taught in a rural school, Cooke City School. While teaching he attended EMC and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in education. He taught school for over thirty years, all 8 grades, all subjects and including all six of his own children. Raymond also owned a grocery store and gas station in Cooke City. Raymond was an avid bicyclist and rode his bike on the mountains surrounding Cooke City. He also enjoyed geology. He lived in Bremerton, WA for awhile and then moved to Laurel in 2004. Raymond is survived by his children, Gina M. (Todd) Gahagan of Bozeman; Raymond C. (Cheryl) Mus of Billings; Mark D. (Rita) Mus of Laurel; Patrick V. (Carol) Mus of Bremerton, WA; Wanda S. (Chris) Champlin of Lynnwood, WA; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by son Christopher, daughter Christina; brother Vincent Mus and sister Mae Masse, and two childhood siblings. Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time.

Raymond will long be remembered for all his great stories of Cooke City. I enjoyed talking with him about all the new things happening in Cooke City. Know he loved that biycle and rode it probably to the end. I will miss him.

Hi Mark and Rita, Your cousin Kelly here. Ray called us and let us know about Uncle Raymond. Dad asked me to send his condolences. And my husband and I, as well as the rest of my family, send our condolences also, to you and the rest of your family. Mark it would be nice to touch base with you some time. I have some pictures we found among mom's things that I am going to have copies made of to share with anyone in the family who would like one. We have a large old studio photo of “our” great grandmother on the Mus side. She looks so much like Zita. (You don’t by any chance know what her name was, do you?) Mr. Mus was a great teacher, mentor and friend. i am sad that I lost touch with him after I moved away from Montana, but he had a deep and lasting impact on my life. He inspired me to be curious about the world around from science to nature, technology to machines. I am proud to be considered one of his students. Prayers, to the family for their loss.

My brother Jon and I were boarded with Mary Mus, mother of Raymond, Vincent and Mae from 1946 till around 1949. Raymond and Vincent were already grown and gone but we saw them very often as they visited their mom and sister Mae. The boys used to take me up to Cooke City to stay with them for a few days to a week and were like big brothers to me as well as father figures. I have often looked back at those difficult years and am grateful that they gave me some much needed guidance and attention.
