Mathilda Steiner

Matti Steiner danced her way into heaven on Saturday, February 11, 2017. She passed away peacefully at Jensen Cottage, where they've cared for her for over a year. Matti was the 4th child of Michael & Frances Koch. She was raised in Mandan, ND with her brother and 3 sisters. Matti went to a dance one day and met a man, John. He told his friends that day that he had met the woman he would marry. On June 25, 1941 they were married. They were soon joined by daughter, Jan. John was in the Navy so they spent time living in Nevada. After leaving the service they returned to Mandan. Soon Judy and Jeff joined the family. In 1959 they moved to Billings, MT. Matti had many different office and clerical jobs. She was a member at Holy Rosary Church. She loved spending her time playing pinocle, bridge, and bowling, and always finding time to go dancing. Matti's biggest joy was her family. Her kids married and once they started having children of their own she did everything she could to help. She loved taking her granddaughters to the mall to 'bum around', take them to movies (even ones they weren't supposed to see), and play cards with them. She loved competing and didn't let them win. They had to earn that. Sundays were filled with dinners at her house and card games or lawn jarts. She taught us the importance of family by her example. Matti was preceded in death by her parents, Frances & Michael Koch; husband, John Steiner; daughter, Janice Wilson; siblings, Kay (Don) Andrews, Monica (Curly) Borer, Jack Koch, and brother-in-law Myron Jendro. She is survived by her daughter Judy and son Jeff (Cyndy) Steiner; son-in-law Rodger Wilson; granddaughters Kim (Richard) Martin, Pam (Jim) Berry, Malyssa (Matt) Meeker, Amanda Steiner, & Brenna (Mike) Yarina; great grandchildren Samuel & Eli Berry, Kaleb & Lukas Martin, Maci & Tyler Yarina, and Logyn & Koltyn Meeker; sister Pauline Jendro, and sister-in-law Christine Koch. She has numerous nieces and nephews she loved dearly. Thank you to Dr. Neil Sorensen for his care & support through the years. Thank you also to the staff at Vista & Jensen Cottage.
