Carol Whiteman

Carol Darlene “Oats” (Bends) Whiteman Apashe-Xxaalia “Tired Old” passed on to the other side of the camp on April 10, 2011 due to complications with her long term battle with cancer at the Billings Clinic in Billings, MT. She was a member of Big Lodge and a child of the Whistling Water Clan. She was a member of the Ree Society. She was born prematurely on November 26, 1947 at Indian Health Hospital in Crow Agency, MT to the late Bobby and Clara (Hill) Bends and due to her early arrival she was very cherished by her Great-Grandmother Lizzie Yellowtail, who raised her in Lodge Grass. Carol received her formal education at Lodge Grass Schools. She continued her educational college career at Haskell Institute in Lawrence, KS. She received her business certificate. She was currently attending the Little Big Horn College working towards an A.A. in Substance Abuse Counseling. She married Edward P. Whiteman, Jr. on November 26, 1969 and they made their home in Pryor. She was cherished by her late mother in-law Josephine Whiteman and outfitted with three outfits. From this union they had two boys and three girls. She was employed at numerous places including Social Security, Lodge Grass Schools and St. Charles Mission. She was a secretary, Grief Counselor, Kateri Youth Group, Chaplin at the Billings hospitals providing support and resources for Native American patients & their families. She was a Public Speaker and worked with the MT Womens Prison in Billings, MT. She was a board member for the Messengers for Health. She was currently employed by the Crow Tribe. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Duane Bends and Larry Yellowtail, Mike and Clement Friday, sisters Ann Friday and Budine Fredericks, her grandparents, Sister Kate and “Cookie” Bell Rock. Survivors include her husband, her sons Channis (Gerlinda), Edward “Posey” Whiteman, III and Ian White, her daughters Quindy (Elvis) Old Bull, Claura Whiteman, Keri (Robert) Pine and Tana (Jason) Shane. Brothers Arnie (Debby), Leonard (Regina), Daryl (Carletta), Byron (Veronica) Bends, John (Mary) Cummins, Jr., Clifford Birdinground, Sr. Sisters Ada, Budine Bends and Nancy (Ben) Gros Ventre, Sarah (Mike) Little Shield. Her adopted children Benji Bulltail, Mary and Almira Wall, Alma Costa, Robin Cauliflower, John Push, Allison Morning Gun, Belle Laverdure, J.K., Rita and Janice Bell Rock, Marshea Little Light, Clemadean and Inez House, Elizabeth and Tronnes Birdinground, Jonalea, Mary and Cecelia Plain Feather, Raven Good Luck and Jared Stewart. Her special friends Eleanor Smart Enemy, Theo Ascencio, Doris Gets Down, Doris Limber Hand, Melanie Falls Down, Jolene High Hawk, Wyma Little Light, Lois McConnell, Ashley DiFronzo, Geneva Whiteman, Brother Bead, Mike Yakawitch, Merna Spotted Bear, and Lois Stevens. Aunts Gloria Cummins and Agnes Pretty Weasel. Brother in-laws Norman (Angie), Channis (Norma) Whiteman, Calvin Herrera, Eugene Red Star. Sister in-laws Valeen and Carol Whiteman, Jolene (Dale) Kills Pretty Enemy. Her grandchildren Charine, Chantel, Chandra Whiteman, Kevion Ladson, and Coral, EJ, and Char Old Bull. Reiney, Jora, Mercedes, Jaylen, Sarcy and Miracle Shane. Jeremy Keo and his children. Numerous Godchildren, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and friends. Extended families include Bends, Yellowtail, Duchein, Takes Gun, Hogan, Old Coyote, Old Horn, Moccasin, One Goose, Plays, Hill, Hugs, Takes Enemy, Plentyhoops, Birdinground, Alice Mae Laforge family, Friday, Fredericks, Lion Shows, Goes Ahead, Thomas, Bear Cloud, Whiteman, DeCrane, Venne, Turns Plenty, Old Bear, Yarlott, Alden, Iron, Williamson, Rock Above, Plain Bull, Horn and Crooked Arm families; our family is large if we have forgotten anyone please forgive us. Cemetery: Interment will be in Whiteman Family Cemetery. Service: Rosary will be 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, 2011 and Funeral Services 1:00 p.m. Thursday, April 14 at St. Charles Mission in Pryor.
