Norman Whiteman

Norman Charles Whiteman passed away unexpectedly Friday night at St. Vincent's Hospital at the age of 74. He was a Crow Tribal member of the Whistling Water Clan and a child of the Ties The Bundle Clan. He lived in Pryor, Crow Agency, and Billings. Born September 1, 1940 to Josephine DeCrane and Edward Posey Whiteman, Sr., he attended St. Charles Mission, Crow Elementary School, Edgar High School, the University of Montana and Montana State University. Norman served in the Air Force until 1961. On July 3, 1965 he married Angeline Louise Sun Goes Slow. He lived in Pryor, Crow Agency, and Billings and worked as a firefighter and oil refinery worker. He was employed at Conoco, Inc. until 2004 when he retired with 37 years of service. His last position was Number 1 Pumper. Norman was a devoted parishioner of the Roman Catholic Church and a proud member of the Oil, Chemical, and Atomic Workers International Union. He was an avid sports fan with an inexhaustible memory for basketball and football statistics. He especially loved watching Georgetown Basketball, Notre Dame Football, and Plenty Coups basketball. He had an extensive collection of caps and sports team apparel and was always meticulously dressed. He also had a phenomenal memory for faces and corresponding names. Recently, he recognized his mother's physician after not seeing him for fifty years. Norman loved to travel. His favorite vacation destinations included Yellowstone National Park, visiting his daughters, any football stadium, and camping in the Pryor Mountains. Norman was dearly loved by his wife, Angeline Whiteman, and his daughters Mae (Lawrence) Fey, Wendy Whiteman, and Rhonda Whiteman. He is survived by an extensive family, including siblings Geneva Whiteman, Edward Posey Whiteman, Jr., Jolene Kills Pretty Enemy, and Valeen Plain Feather. He has joined his parents, sister and brother at the other side of the camp. The Vigil for Norman will be at 6 pm, Wednesday, September 2nd, at Dahl Funeral Chapel, 10 Yellowstone Avenue in Billings and the Funeral Mass will be at 1:30 pm, Thursday, September 3rd, at St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral, 215 North 31st Street in Billings. Rite of Committal to follow the mass at the Lodge Grass Cemetery.
