Lawrence Bangert

Lawrence “Sonny” Bangert passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at St. Johns nursing home on October 24th, 2020. Sonny was born November, 25 1928 to Catherine and Fred Bangert in Forsyth, MT. Sonny was raised in a farming family with his seven brothers and sisters. Sonny had three children; Cathy, Larry, and Sherry. Sonny spent his life farming the land of the Yellowstone River Valley. He bought his first farm in 1971 south of Belfry where he farmed with his family. Sonny was affectionately called “Bump Bump” by his grandchildren who were raised on the family farm. Throughout his farming career Sonny received multiple sugar beet production awards. Sonny was known for being amazing gardener and loved providing his family and friends with fresh produce each fall. Sonny was a collector. One of Sonny's greatest joys was collecting baseball caps from various friends, family, and business partners he encountered throughout his life. Sonny never met a stranger. Once you came into Sonny's life you were forever his friend. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Sonny is preceded in death by his parents, siblings, daughter Cathy, and daughter Sherry. He is survived by his son Larry (Nancy) Bangert of Laurel, grandson Loren (Lacy) Bangert of Silesia, granddaughter Karen (Matt) Payovich of Billings, grandson Gary (Amannda) Bangert of Killdeer, granddaughter Lindsey (TJ) Lehman of Helena, grandson Bryan Somers of Portland, and multiple great grandchildren. A special thank you to Sonny's nephew, Dick Hardt, for the wonderful visits and trips he had with Sonny while he was living in St. Johns. The family would also like thank St. John's Lutheran Ministries for taking excellent care of Sonny in the last years of his life. Memorial services will be held Saturday, November 14th at 1:00 at the Belfry school. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to St. John's Lutheran Ministries.
