Carl Dunbar

Carl Oscar Dunbar, 59, was born on April 4,1962 on Malstrom Air Force Base in Great Falls, MT to George and Irene Dunbar. He was proud of the fact he was the “4th son, of the 4th son, of the 4th son, born on the 4th day of the 4th month”. Carl passed away peacefully at his home with his loving wife by his side on November 2, 2021. Carl lived throughout the United States while growing up, before his parents settled in Billings in 1972. Carl attended Bitterroot Elementary, Grand Ave Elementary, Lincoln Jr High and graduated from Billings Senior High in 1980. At the time, he did not know his future wife was attending the same schools. Carl met the love of his life Shelly Robillard after graduation. They were married on September 10, 1983. In the years following, they were blessed with 3 amazing sons: Christopher, Matthew and Taylor. Carl enjoyed spending time with his family. He enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting and passed his love of these activities to his boys. Many weekends were spent camping and we are forever grateful for these memories. He also enjoyed attending his boys' baseball, hockey, and soccer games, bowling events and cub scout activities. Unique things he will also be remembered for are: Maple Bar Mondays, Fritter Fridays, his red polka dotted hat, his initials being COD (Cash on Delivery) and his love of dancing. Carl's hard work ethic started at Pierce Packing before becoming a manager at Masterlube, followed by Stillwater Mining where he dedicated 23 years of service. After leaving Stillwater he pursued his passion for the outdoors by working for the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks. Following in his father's footsteps, Carl was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Elks. Carl was a loving father, husband, and friend. It would be difficult to find a person with a caring and giving heart as big as Carl's. He spent many hours helping to care for his in-laws Russell and Ruthy Robillard. They will truly miss his daily visits. Carl leaves behind his wife, Shelly, sons Christopher, Matthew (Shelby) and Taylor. Carl is also survived by his sisters Vicki (Dusty) Gress, Nancy Daniels, brother David Dunbar and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, cousins and friends. He loved his 5 grand puppies and will be deeply missed by his beloved side-kick Gretzky. He was preceded in death by his father George (2014), mother Irene (2007), and brothers Chris (1978) and Jerry (2012). Also several aunts and uncle that he loved dearly. Carl has requested his ashes to be spread at his favorite campground in Paradise Valley. We would also like to thank Carl's Riverstone Hospice nurse, Paula for her support, care and compassion during this difficult time. She will forever hold a special place in our hearts. Memorials in Carl's memory may be made to The Knights of Columbus or Rez Dog Rescue of MT.
