Carol Howe

Carol Ann Little Light-Howe “Dakkchialawaa (Carries Her Child)” went to be with God (Akbaatadia) on November 26, 2021, at Billings Clinic. Carol was born November 19, 1943, to Richard Andrew Little Light, Jr., and Mildred Crooked Arm in Crow Agency, MT. Carol was a member of the Whistling Water Clan and Child of Big Lodge. Carol grew up in Wyola, MT with her parents and siblings where she attended grade school as a Wyola Magpie. She finished her High School diploma in Lodge Grass, MT (Class of 1962.) After graduating, she married her soul mate, Robert Sargie Howe on September 8, 1967. Carol and Sargie made their home in Missoula, MT. Carol was a "stay at home" mother while living in Missoula so her husband could pursue his college education. They then settled down in Lodge Grass where Carol became a working mother and worked at several places of employment. She first worked as a Secretary at St. Labre Catholic School in Ashland; Teachers Aid at Wyola Elementary; Community Health representative for Crow Nation; Mental Health Aid for Public Health Service; CNA for Sacred Heart & Yankton Catholic Monastery, Yankton, South Dakota; Dormitory Matron for Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, KS; an advocate and board member for Messengers for Health and Family Advocate for Head Start in Crow Agency. She was also an Election Poll Judge for the Crow Tribe for ten years. At the age of 47, Carol enrolled, alongside her husband, at Haskell Indian Nations University and later at Little Big Horn College, earning her AA Degree in Early Childhood Education and Liberal Arts. Carol was a firm believer of God and was a Catholic member of Our Lady of Loretto Church in Lodge Grass. While growing up, Carol was well known as a traditional Crow woman in all aspects of life. She was a person anyone could turn to for prayer or to learn traditional values. As a Crow woman she passed down her cultural values and ideology to not only her children and grandchildren, but to the Crow people as well. She loved to bake homemade cakes, pies, and bread. She also loved to hand sew blankets for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Carol is preceded in death by her parents Richard and Mildred Crooked Arm Little Light; siblings: Andrew, Alvin, Ronald Sr, Constance Little Light; nephews: Robin, Homer and Maynard Little Light, BJ Backbone, Helen Iron, Vickie Yarlott Crooked Arm; niece: Kathy Asencio; grandsons: Ferlin Blacksmith, Byron Little Light, Justin Shane; granddaughter: Cecily Shane.
