James Sherburn

James (Jim) Ray Sherburn passed away on a beautiful spring day, May 24, 2025, surrounded by his wife and family. Jim was born on August 25, 1932 in Hedgesville, MT and later moved to Harlowton, MT where he grew up until proudly enlisting in the National Guard for two years and then into the Navy for four years, serving time in the Korean war. He was the ninth child born to John and Alfretta Sherburn. Jim met the love of his life, Patricia Schaff, at a dance just days before he left to serve in the Navy. During the four years he was gone they corresponded via letters and shortly after returning home from the Navy they married on April 14th, 1956 and made Billings, MT their home. Jim and Pat had two children, Douglas and Dianah, who they cherish.

Jim was a great husband and father. He loved his family and was always with them whether it was camping, hunting, fishing, boating, or to help and support his son at motorcycle races and hillclimbs. He loved restoring old cars, woodworking, building and flying remote control planes, and could build and fix about anything. Jim was also a talented artist and a life member of the Knights of Columbus. His journey on earth was marked by love, a deep faith, and genuine kindness.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings Arnold (Ollie), Leon, Bud, Lila Skartveit, Anna (Annie) Kucera, and Ruth Thompson & 2 brothers who passed at a young age.

He is survived by his wife, Pat, and children, Douglas (Donna), Dianah Boreson (Michael); grandchildren Amy S., Amy B., Crystal, Nicole, Sarah, James, Anna; and great-grandchildren Wyatt, Wade, Madison, Jayleigh, Ava, Garrison, Lily, Hawthorne, Taliyah, Elijah, and Jacob; sister-in-law Lois Schaff, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dad, you were such a great inspiration to us and we are so thankful for all the values and skills you taught us over our lifetime. You will be greatly missed and we love you so much.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Jim's life will take place on at 2pm on Saturday June 28, 2025 at Dahl Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to your favorite charity.
