Obituary
Marjorie Ann Carter, 85, of Billings passed away at the Bella Terra nursing home on May 17, 2022, with family by her side.
She was born in Williston, North Dakota on June 29, 1936, to parents Fred and Alice (Hayward) McIntyre.
She married Andrew Jackson Jr. on September 13, 1953, in Sidney Montana and they lived on the family farm with their three children: Jess, Julie and Rod. Andrew died in a farming accident in 1970. Marj remarried in 1972 to Don Carter and moved the family to Billings. During a hunting trip they made a stop in Two Dot, MT and made it their home until their divorce. But Marj stayed in Two Dot where she met a ranch foreman, John Christensen, who became her companion and friend for more than 20 years. After John's death in 2002 she moved back to Billings to be closer to family.
Marj had numerous occupations throughout her life. She was a cook at Buck's bar in Billings and made a mean chili, owned the Two Dot Bar for a couple of years, she was the custodian and grounds keeper and sometimes teachers aid at the schoolhouse in Two Dot for years until it closed, and garden and grounds worker at Zoo MT with her dear friend Dyan. She loved birds, flowers and gardening and was very knowledgeable about identifying and educating with a humble insight on all three of these passions. She regularly watched the weather channel to offer that additional insight when it came to plants, gardening, and travel. Marj loved her family and was sharp when it came to remembering special dates and birthdays. She loved western movies and country music. She wasn't a computer or technology savvy person but was firm and unwavering in her upbringing and way of life. She would often refer to different tech devices as that “gizmowoopie thing”. She would also say things like “just like uptown”, “good cook, Doris” and “oh boy, got us a gullywasher out there”. She had lots of funny words and great proverbs to teach about life. Her memory was sharp, she told wonderful stories of life on the farm and of her early childhood. She could tell the whereabouts of certain folks from seeing the county number on a Montana plate. She enjoyed all holidays and making sweet treats and buying unique gifts for family members. Marj proclaimed herself as a homebody and was content relaxing at home watching the everyday ordinary (or extraordinary, depending on how you look at it) life that was right in her backyard. Marj could be quite ornery and feisty at times, but we loved her anyway. She would always say that was the McIntyre in her. It's all these qualities and quirks that make a person who they are. She was loved greatly by her family and will certainly be missed but also celebrated with a level of humbling joy as she continues to live on in our hearts and memories. We thank her for her love, and all that she has done and continues to do through the wonders of God's love.
Marj is survived by her daughter, Julie Dugas, sons Rod (Mary) Jackson and Jess (Pam) Jackson, grandchildren, Alex (Heath) Simpson, Max Dugas, Andrew (Holli) Jackson, Ashley Barnes, Mary Jackson, Ryley (Jamie) Jackson, Nathan (Alana) Jackson, Troy (Felicia) Jackson, Sunni Harris, and Arlo (Kari) Riedl. Great grandchildren Krew and Finn Jackson, Parker and Hartley Christensen, Aliyah Jackson, Andrew Jackson, Elizabeth, Jacob, Ethan, and Chloe Harris, Timothy, Tristan, and Teonna Riedl who is mother to Marj's one great great grandchild Ezmerelda. Marj's sister, Laura Macik, and numerous nieces and nephews. The John Christensen family Les (Lorna), Kerri, Kelli (Russ), John (Cynthia), Keith (Pam) and their families.
Marj was preceded in death by her parents, husband Andrew Jackson Jr., sister Mildred Shields and brother David McIntyre, son-in-law Tim Dugas, companion John Christensen, his daughter Phyllis and son-in-law Scott.
Marj requested cremation and her wishes are to be buried next to her dad at the Poker Jim cemetery in North Dakota. A small celebration of her life with burial of ashes will be held there at around 2pm on Saturday, September 3, 2022, for family and friends.
The family would like to give special thanks to her long-time physician and friend, Dr. Frank Michels, the staff at St Vincent's, Avantara Rehab and the Bella Terra nursing home who provided her with such great care.
