Obituary
Charles “Chuck” Michael Carroll, age 75 of Billings, Montana, gained his angel wings and passed from this Earthly life on June 25, 2022, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Chuck was born on June 2, 1947, in Billings, Montana to Mathias E. Carroll and Valetta K. Fox-Carroll. Being the eldest of ten children, Chuck was a natural-born leader and teacher, traits that he would carry throughout his life. Chuck and his siblings were raised in Billings. As a child, he loved baseball and was actively involved in high school activities. He played the trumpet in the school band and was also a proud member of a local band called the Alley Cats. Chuck went on to graduate from Billings Central Catholic High School in 1965. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy.
Chuck was honored and proud to serve his country. He faithfully served in the Navy from 1966 to 1995. During his illustrious career, Chuck was stationed from coast to coast but mostly could be found at the bottom of the sea on U.S. Navy submarines serving as a Senior Chief Submarine Sonar Technician. During his career, he received several honors including the Best Sailor on the West Coast award. During his last few years in the Navy, Chuck returned to college and in 1994 received his Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Science and Technology from Trinity International University.
After his retirement from military service, Chuck found his second career in education. Chuck always had a special place in his heart for all children. He taught and was the Dean of Students at his alma mater, Billings Central Catholic High School from 1997 until his retirement in 2009. Being an educator allowed Chuck to interact with and mentor youth, something he truly enjoyed. He taught his students valuable life lessons and was always there to listen. He was proud to serve as the speech and debate coach during his time at Billings Central.
After Chuck's retirement from education, he remained active in his community. His love of baseball led him to coaching, umpiring, and serving on the Billings Little League Board. Chuck was always proud of his service to his country, and he continued his love of country by serving the VFW. He was active in Billings VFW Post #6774. Chuck served as the Post Commander for VFW #6774., Junior Vice Commander, and most recently served as the Commander of the VFW Department of Montana. In 2019, Chuck had the honor of being a part of the commissioning of the USS Billings. Chuck was a proud veteran and enjoyed being active in the VFW.
Chuck was kind, witty, and had an amazing sense of humor. If you had the pleasure of knowing Chuck, you know that he was a lot of fun to be around. He always had a smile on his face and could make anyone smile. Chuck was a jack of all trades, including Master Electrician, and could fix just about anything. He was handy and lived by the mantra that you could never have too many tools. He had at least two of everything! He loved ice cream and would never turn down the opportunity to indulge in the cold treat. Chuck was also the Carroll family historian. He took time to research the family's genealogy and gathered all the information and put it together in one place. He was a wealth of knowledge on all things Carroll. Chuck had a heart of gold and was an incredibly special person to many people. His grandchildren, nieces, and nephews adored him. He was affectionately known as Uncle Buttercup because he was always so kind and caring.
Chuck is preceded in death by his parents and younger brother John. He is survived by his wife Alice; children Heidi (Roger) Williams, Heather (Mitch) Petty, Donald (Marna) Carroll, Sherrie (Brian) Jinkinson, Shane Johnson, and Scott Johnson; siblings Jim Carroll, David (Jackie) Carroll, Dan (Jeannie) Carroll, Lorri Lindsay, Colleen (Steve) Skuhra, Mary (Rick) Hamilton, Sara (Kurt) Kittelson, and Nora Carroll; sixteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family. Chuck was loved, revered, admired, and respected by many and will truly be missed.

I will always remember Chuck fondly and always consider him like a brother to me. He was always kind, witty, and had an open ear to listen to any concerns of all of the family including looking in on his younger brother Jim for me when he was hospitalized. He was always so kind and good to my children and really to all children and we will hold our fond memories of him close to our hearts. Oh, to grow up and be more like him:) I will always love you, Chuck, and yes, Susan sat on a tack and Susan Rose!!

I was a student at Central and had the pleasure of walking the halls, being scolded for parking where I wasn’t allowed, and sharing laughs with Mr Carroll, or “The Hammer” as we affectionately called him. I’ll remember him for his big heart and sense of humor. Rest in peace Mr Carroll.

Our cousin, Chuck, what a man, what a man! Reading his obituary, my thoughts and memories of a fellow teen in Absarokee at the "cabin" brings tears and giggles. We lived apart most of our adult lives and did not interact much. Chuck's amazing life was a story of service and love and he certainly extended those qualities to my sisters and my parents in their later lives. He would often visit them and help in anyway he could. Standing before the Lord, I am sure he heard, "Well done, my good and faithful servant."
