Obituary

Dominic Anthony Gibson was a young man born in Sioux Falls, SD that lived in Cody, WY for the past 10+ years. He passed away suddenly at the age of 24 (just 2 months shy of his 25th birthday) due to a tragic car accident that took place on Tuesday August 2nd of 2022. He is succeeded by his only child, a son, named Braden Thomas American Horse. He also leaves behind his fiancé and love of his life Tara McCarthy whom he had been in a relationship with for the past 10 years and had known her since Dominic was in the 6th grade. The two of them were inseparable and no doubt meant to be life-long companions. Although they didn't have any children of their own, they do have a minpin named Champ (aka Chum Lee Wilson The 3rd) that was happy to call them mom and dad.

Dominic is the youngest of 6 children from his mother, Kelly (Johnson) Lohstreter of Cody, WY and 3rd out of 4 children from his father, Carlo Gibson of Hot Springs, SD. All of the siblings from his mother's side from eldest to youngest are Shyla, Phillip, Devon, Samantha, and Mariah. And all of the siblings from his father's side from eldest to youngest are Sara, Shauntill, and Elizabeth. Dominic also had a brother named Levi J.F. Mitchell that is not related by blood but by a bond built from the day Dominic was born. Dominic grew up primarily with his mother's side of the family whom almost all reside in Wyoming. The closest relatives to him other than his mother and his siblings are his aunt Corrinda, his aunt Babe, and his uncle Todd. The number of Dominic's cousins and nieces and nephews grows by the day; and he is missed by each and every one of them.

Dominic was an adventurer that let nothing get in his way from being in the great outdoors. From fishing and hiking to camping and kayaking, there isn't a mountain in the bighorn region that he didn't leave his footprint on. Finding arrowheads for him was like finding a penny on the sidewalk. It never ceases to amaze how quickly and easily he would find them. Another skill he had was finding deer and elk sheds. At one point he had so many that he found that he could have made a Christmas tree out of them! He loved rock hunting and always had a handful of new stones to take home to show mom. He has us all watching the ground when we go anywhere looking for rocks that stand out to us but would otherwise be discarded and unnoticed by everyone else.

He will be missed dearly, and not another soul on this earth will ever compare to that of Dominic Anthony Gibson.

When we were younger, we lived in Sioux Falls SD. When there would be a lot of snow, we would go to the parking lots of hotels and make igloos out of the snow piles created form the plows. It was our own little ice kingdom. A place to be whatever and whoever we wanted to be, at least until the ice melted.

Another memory I have of us is kayaking on the lower level lake of Beck Lake in Cody WY. We found a small creek like opening in the bank and we paddled ourselves in there. Not too long after getting into this creek, the water level began to drop and we could feel the bottom of the creek on the bottom of our kayaks. We did the whole lean forward and scoot over and over again until we got our selves turned around enough to get out. We even had to use our paddles a few times to push off of the bank to give us a boost. Before the water got too shallow, we could see fish along the bank. There were schools of them, and they didn't seem to care that we were there. It was kind of magical. We made it out just fine, but it was definitely a moment I will never forget.

One of my happiest memories was when Dominic and Jake were doing the Monster Lake challenge together. They were both so excited and happy! Ready to catch the biggest fish! I was so proud of both of my son in laws ❤ Their smiles that day still make me smile!

We have so many incredible memories but I will never forget how special our first vacation was together. It was a trip full of firsts. Your first time flying, first time visiting the ocean, first time at an arcade, first time being so far away from home, and we celebrated our very first anniversary. We built sand castles and endlessly looked for shells on the beach since it was too cold to swim. We played games in the arcade for hours and ate junk food on the boardwalk when we weren’t eating seafood, we went back to the same sushi restaurant I think 3 times during that trip, we were obsessed. And for lunches we had to get our favorite shrimp tacos from The Purple Parrot. Ice cream was also necessary after each meal. We had fun choosing a different weird flavor each time. The most special moments were in between, just enjoying each other and being together, we were inseparable. We enjoyed looking through the shops to find the perfect jar to bring home a piece of the beach with us. We filled it with sand and our newly found shells, we even brought home a horseshoe crab leg. We still have that same jar in our home almost 10 years later. Even though we had a super early flight the next day, on our last night there, we decided to sneak out on our own after midnight to go to the beach one last time to look for ghost crabs. We had looked up the best times to find them and when they migrated so we had to give it a shot. We stumbled around in the dark with just our phone lights on the hunt. I think we had found about 6 or 7 when it began to downpour on us. We got soaked running back to the house about two blocks away but we didn’t care we laughed the whole time. Every adventure no matter how small felt so magical with you. We didn’t want to go home and wanted to stay in that happy space forever. We even talked a lot about moving there for years to come but couldn’t give up our mountains and loved being close to family. I wish there was a reel somewhere of all of our happiest memories to watch back and reminisce, but even the bits and pieces will play in my mind forever.

When we were younger, we lived in Sioux Falls SD. During the winter, we would get feet upon feet of snow. There was a famous hill called Tut Hill where everybody loved to go sledding. We would take couch cushions and stuff them inside of black trash bags and tie them up, and this was our sled for the afternoon. All day we would be out there. Bundled up so much that we didn't feel even the slightest chill. Sioux falls is where I had the most memories with Dominic. We were young, but we would venture out and paint the town with our adventures. At Terrace Park, there was a lake that was home to a very old snapping turtle. We would go there and fish together. Even though we weren't supposed to, we would fish with canned corn instead of worms. I can't recall if I ever caught anything, but I'm almost certain that Dominic did. No matter how young he was, that young man was gifted at everything he did. He would assist me with forts that we made from the center of lilac bushes. He would gather dandelions with me so that we could give mom some flowers, and any time we were given money, we were going to Munchies (convenience store) and getting as many one cent tootsie rolls as we could (at the time they were a penny a piece!). He went everywhere with everyone. He was very much everyone's baby at some point. He will always be my baby brother, even though he wasn't much younger that me, and I will miss him every day that I am on this earth.
