Michael Hughs

Michael Edward Hughs was born to Cecil and Caroline Hughs on August 4th, 1952, in Sealy Texas and passed onto the Lord on September 17th in Billings Montana. Michael is survived by his wife Merle, son Johnathan “Bucky” Hughs, Brother Jim and wife Jennifer Hughs, Brother Cecil and wife Jean Hughs, Sister Rita Wells and husband Rob all of Billings Montana, and grandchildren Alex Michael, Danielle Kay, Cameron Mathew, Zander James and Nickolas Edward. Michael was known as “Mike” to most but “Pops” to his beloved grandchildren.

Mike loved working with children and spent the majority of his professional career as an educator in Billings, Montana. He was especially proud of being the longest tenured teacher of 26 years working on the Southside of Billings at Taft, Garfield and Orchard Schools. In addition, Mike also taught at Alkali Creek prior to retirement. Mike was employed by the City of Billings during summers as the Manager of South Park Pool for many years and custodian for the Billings Operations Center. Mike worked his way through college by cutting meat at several Billings and Laurel supermarkets and graduated with Bachelors-High Honors and Masters-High Honors Degrees in Education from Eastern Montana College.

While attending college, Mike met the love of his life, Merle Rasmussen and they were married on September 7, 1974, at Riverside Park in Laurel Montana. Mike's proudest moments were in telling everyone that when he met Merle “He knew that she was the one”. He must have known that to be a fact because at the time of his passing, they had been married for 48 years.

Mike also had a special relationship with the Lord and was a member of Valley Christian Church in Billings, Montana. Michael is preceded in death by his parents Cecil and Caroline Hughs and brother, William Paul Hughs. Mike will be sorely missed by his friends and family. Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother, Teacher, Friend, and Neighbor . . . Mike was loved by everyone whose life he touched.
