Obituary

Grover Lee Whiteman, 65, of Billings, formerly of Lame Deer, passed away on Sunday. October 16, 2022. His Indian name was “Mohonoone” which meant Gros Ventre. Grover Lee was born on September 17, 1957, to Cecelia Kinzel Medicine Elk and Grover Whiteman in Crow Agency, Montana. He attended grade school in Lame Deer and Twin Falls, Idaho with the Mormon Student Placement Program. Upon his return to Lame Deer, he attended high school in Busby, graduating in 1975. Grover excelled in track and cross country and played basketball for the Busby Eagles. He will be remembered for his speed in the 440 and 880. He later attended Eastern Montana College in Billings.


After his parents divorce, he was raised by his father on the Whiteman Homestead, later moving back with his mother after his father's death. In his youth, his favorite past times were riding horses and spending time with his first cousins, Little Phil Whiteman, Johnny Boy and Jason Whiteman, Marvin “Gizzard” Killsnight, Eric Killsnight and Ronnie Whiteman. He and his younger brother, Gary were very close growing up and were always together. As a young man, still in high school, he owned a motorcycle and purchased his first car, and the chicks loved it. Grover Lee loved to go hunting. Grover Lee never married nor had any children, however, he loved all of his nieces and nephews and grandchildren as his own. He was especially close to his sister, Rynalea Whiteman-Pena whom he loved very much. His heart was broken when his youngest sister, Germaine was killed in a car accident in 1977.


Grover loved music and wore his headphones listening to his favorite jams each day. He loved all types of music. Grover had many friends and staff who loved him at the Billings Dialysis Center where he went three times a week for over 20 years. He was a quiet individual and loved to visit with his many friends, family and caretakers. He had no enemies. All he had was love for his family and friends.

Grover was currently living in Billings at the TLC Home Care Center in Lockwood after an extended illness. Before that, Grover resided in the loving and caring assisted living home of Vicky Burling and family. He absolutely loved the Burling family, and all 20 of the grandchildren, and they loved him. The Burling family and are thankful that he spent 25 years with them. He was so happy and well cared for with them and the family wishes to thank them for their love and care for over 25 years.


Surviving siblings include: Rosale Tallbull, Dennis (Kay) Limberhand, Joyce Knowshisgun, Maynard (Ursula) Limberhand, Doris Limberhand, Gary Lightning and Rynalea Whiteman-Pena. He is also survived by his namesake, Key' Shawn Grover Lee He Crow; special nephew, Jonah Red Cherries; numerous nieces, nephews, and relatives too numerous to mention, and friends he grew up with; special friends: Mike Piret, Elverna Big Medicine, Vicky Herden, and Aunt Jackie from the Burling family. Extended family includes the Limberhand, Whiteman, Brady, Kinzel, American Horse, Harris and Hiwalkers.


Grover was preceded in death by his parents, Grover Whiteman and Cecelia Kinzel Medicine Elk; siblings: his beloved sister, Germaine Whiteman, Elizabeth (Bell-Bell) Clawson, Herman Limberhand, Benny Limberhand, Chester Limberhand, Lillian Limberhand; grandmothers, Alice Kinzel, Emma Whiteman; grandfathers, Wesley Whiteman, Frank Whiteman, Sr.; uncles: John, Sr., Phillip, Sr., Harvey, Frank, Jr., and Robert Whiteman; aunts: Helen Hiwalker, Rose Rapos, Cyrilla American Horse, Emma Fotland, Margaret Brady, Hazel Killsnight, Josephine Dresser, Vicki Wounded; nieces: Angela Whiteman, Shana Red Cherries, Violet Whiteman; nephew: Benji Tallbull; cousins: Leola Whiteman, Jolene Gardner.


The family would like to thank his medical providers at the Billings Dialysis Center and all those who have cared for his medical needs over the years, especially his counselor, Dwayne Bondi.


There will be a visitation at Dahl Funeral Chapel on Friday, October 21, 2022, from 5:00-8:00 PM. Funeral services will be Saturday, October 22nd at the Lame Deer Mennonite Church at 11:00 AM with burial at the Kinzel family cemetery, three miles north of Lame Deer.

RIP my dear uncle Grover Lee. I'll always remember how you made our child hood fun, showing us all your fancy basketball moves, to getting in trouble because me and you wrecked on your motorcycle.
