Obituary

Karen J. Hanson, age 79, passed away in Billings, MT on January 9, 2023. She was born in Great Falls, MT to Melvin and Helen (Holyoak) Johnson on August 19, 1943. She attended MSU-Bozeman, and Eastern Montana College to obtain a degree in education.


Karen met, and on August 8, 1964, married Richard “Dick” Hanson at Holy Family Catholic Church in Great Falls. The couple settled in Billings where Karen taught at Highland Elementary School until her first daughter, Michelle, was born; daughter Nicole made their family complete.

Karen enjoyed baking, reading, music (especially Celine Dion and Josh Groban), camping with family and friends, luncheon group, and volunteering for Montana Arthritis Foundation.


Karen was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Dick; daughters Michelle Morgan and Nicole Rice; grandchildren Isaiah, Aidan, and Kaylee; brother Neal (Ruth) Johnson; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.


A funeral service will be held at Dahl Funeral Chapel, 10 Yellowstone, on Wednesday, January 18th at 12:00 PM, followed by a reception. A graveside service will be held the same day at Yellowstone National Cemetery, 55 Buffalo Trail Rd, Laurel, MT at 2:00 PM.


In lieu of flowers, donations in Karen's name may be sent to Riverstone Hospice, 2230 Mission Way, Billings, MT 59102.

I always got such a kick out of seeing your mom when she came to visit. She had such great stories and told them in such a way that she had us all mesmerized by her. Your Mom's kindness was such a gift and it was so evident how much she loved her family.
